Woodlawn Principal Blog 5/24/19

Happy Friday of Memorial Day Weekend!  We had a lot of fun with our 8th graders this week as they have been practicing for graduation and went to Great America yesterday.  This is a really nice group of students and I want to honor them at graduation with a classy ceremony.

8th Grade Graduation Night - Parking & Behavior

Woodlawn parents, please park in Stevenson Parking Lot E which is WEST of the football field for our graduation ceremonies.  The ceremony begins at 5:30p.m. sharp! We want our graduates in the building and lining up at 5p.m. I look forward to seeing everyone at graduation and want the families of our graduates on their best behavior.  Please be respectful of everyone in the audience AND DO NOT CHEER for your student when their name is called.

2019 SUMMER READING/ASSIGNMENT–Remember to Read!

We encourage summer reading for all our students. This practice is important–research suggests that students can lose more than two months of academic progress if they don't continue to read during summer months.

Please see SUMMER READING for the parent letter/reading assignment info and suggested reading resources for your student (by grade level).

Zhao Family Fundraiser

2018 Woodlawn graduate and 3 time national champion Ray Zhao suffered a spinal cord injury during high jump training.  We will be collecting donations until Wednesday of this upcoming week if you would like to contribute.

Woodlawn Track & Field - State Results

This past weekend Woodlawn was well represented at the IESA Class AA State Track meet.

We saw temps anywhere from a high of 87 and sunny to a low of 45 with a pestering drizzle. Through it all, our athletes did an amazing job! Parker White started it off on day with a personal record (PR) in the shot put, finishing 20th in the State. Ben Snider PR in the 110m hurdles, finishing 16th in the State. Alex Wu hit her second best long jump of the year to finish 30th in the State. Ava Mecir finished the day with a very fast run in the 100m dash to take 19th place overall.

Day 2 started off hot with our only 7th grader, Randy Clay, high jumping his way onto the podium for 8th place in the event. The returning State medalist 4x100 relay team of Alex Wu, Milena Busma, Hailey Livesay, and Ava Mecir (supported by their alternate Sofia Winterkorn) have been on a mission to make their way back on to the podium. The ran a flawless race to finish in 6th place, which makes them our first 2x track state medalist. The 8th grade boys 4x100 relay team of Will Harlow, Adonis Osborne, Ronald Lorenc, and Ben Snider (alternate Jayden Tsai) followed up the best run of the year to finish in 14th overall.

Once we got through the 2 hour rain delay, Ava Mecir finished her middle school track career with a 200m dash to finish 19th place overall. Adonis Osborne finished 20th overall in the 200m dash. Ronald Lorenc's gutsy 800m wrapped up our time at the state meet as he finished 24th overall.

These young athletes should be extremely proud of the work they've put in to prepare for this event and all they have accomplished. Every athlete finished above their pre-meet seed, which is an awesome accomplishment to do your best on such a big stage.

Speaking of the PTO

Thank you to our PTO and all that you do for Woodlawn.  We had a wonderful pizza lunch for everyone here on Wednesday and enjoyed a popsicle treat as well.  It is really amazing when you have such an outstanding group of volunteers working for the benefit of our students.

Finally, my oldest daughter graduates from Rose-Hulman University tomorrow.  Gracie (Mary Grace) is the poster child for hard work and dedication to her studies.  I wish that I could bottle her work ethic, planning and commitment. This woman has had three internships, been in charge of numerous clubs and activities and volunteers all over the place.  By the way, she was hired for a job in December! I am certain that my studies would have faltered (I am being kind to myself by just saying faltered), had I known that I was lined up for a job that far in advance.  In fact, I didn’t know that having a job lined up was even a thing back in the day. Anyways, super proud dad is heading to Terre Haute, and I promise that I will not cheer out loud when they call her name. I will be cheering in my head because that is what you are supposed to do.

Tag goes into the final week.  I was able to get one of my buddies as he was at the golf course last Saturday.  I went into full undercover mode as I put on all of my golf gear, a hat and sunglasses.  When I saw him take out his clubs, I sprung into action. Sprung is a little strong. I walked into action.  As he tied his shoes, I smacked him on his back, turned around and went back to my car. 7:45a.m. and I was no longer it.  Bam! Unfortunately, one of my co-workers sold me out yesterday and I was tagged at a meeting at our district office. Back to the drawing board.  Stay tuned for the exciting and nerve racking finish to this strategic little game.  I feel as though the boys are targeting me because I am the only one who hasn't been "it" at the end of the game.  I'll try to come up with something to remain undefeated.
