Woodlawn Principal's Blog 5/17/19

What a week!  Tuesday night was recognition night at the School Board meeting for many of our students.  Wednesday night was the Woodlawn Talent Show, Thursday was the 5th-8th grade band concert and today our 8th graders have their bowling party.  One more week with our 8th graders and as I watch them walk around the building, I find myself saying, “I am really going to miss this group.”  Here is a list of the upcoming events for our 8th graders next week:

Wednesday 5/22 - Awards Assembly

Thursday 5/23 - Great America

Friday 5/24 - PTO Sponsored Breakfast & Yearbook Signing

Tuesday 5/28 - Graduation at SHS 5:30p.m.

Zhao Family Fundraiser

2018 Woodlawn graduate and 3 time national champion Ray Zhao suffered a spinal cord injury during high jump training.  Quoting his Caring Bridge page, “Today is one month since the accident. It has been the longest month in our life. It still seems surreal sometimes. We live in hopes, this is how I can function everyday. Ray is a very strong willed boy. He surprises me everyday. He passed his swallow test, which means he can eat real food soon, apple sauce, jello etc, no steaks yet.  He improved a lot with his breathing. As nurse Diane put it:” we need to celebrate every improvement Ray makes”. Let’s keep praying for Ray.”

After receiving requests from Woodlawn parents, friends, students and staff, we will hold a collection for Ray and his family next week during our lunch hours.  If you and your family would like, please send a donation with your student. We will also be signing a Woodlawn poster.

The focus is on encouraging your child to love learning and to understand that learning is not the same as knowing.

Dr. Maniacci is a licensed clinical psychologist, instructor, and published author whose works have been translated into numerous languages.

All interested adults are welcome. Contact the District 96 Parent Community Liaison Lubna Andrabi with questions, 847.459.4260, ext. 8136, [email protected]

Woodlawn Talent Show

Amazing!  I cannot tell you how much fun this event was.  Our talented students sang, danced, played musical instruments (guitar, piano, drums, organ, violin) and even a magic trick!  I am so impressed with all of our students.

Band Concert

Mr. Craw and our band students had another fantastic concert last night.  It was a celebration of an entire school year’s worth of practice and lessons.  Having heard the band in the fall, you can really tell the difference and the level of improvement at the Spring Concert.  Way to go Woodlawn Band!

Finally,  I want to thank the parents who have gone through our District 96 school system.  There are still a few parents who started with me as principal of Kildeer elementary school, 16 (long) years ago.  I was a young whipper snapper with dark brown hair and a 34 inch waistline. I miss those days. I digress...the support, collaboration, friendships and positive memories that we have forged, will last my lifetime.  For those parents who I have only know a few years, again, your support is what makes Woodlawn the great school it is. I am so fortunate to work with the great people of this community.

Tag update.  We are entering crunch time for our tag game. The middle of the month and we have gone from Defcon 4 to Defcon 3 (War Games 1983) in our house. There are numerous lapses in safety as my wife tends to leave the garage door open, while the kids are not feeling the same pressure that I am to keep the house locked down.  My “friend” Rich, with an assist from Band Booster President, Jason Kupferschmid, tagged me before the concert last night. This was executed extremely well and right in front of Kildeer principal Vail Kieser. Vail noted, “That was amazing, I felt like I was a part of the tag game!”  Point of interest, Casey Kupferschmid was given a lunch detention today because of the lack of judgement shown by his father.
