Woodlawn Principal's Blog 4/19/19

Another week is in the books here at Woodlawn!  This is the time of year when the Woodlawn staff is challenged to keep our students focused on the work at hand.  We will continue to work with all of our students through the end of the school year. Just a couple of items for the blog this week.

Science Olympiad

Congratulations to Woodlawn's Science Olympiad team!! As we know, Science Olympiad is a very competitive and challenging competition especially in Illinois. All team members should be so excited with their achievements. The students all put in many hours of team practices at school and coaches houses, working hard and having fun. Woodlawn's Science Olympiad team was able to make it to the prestigious Illinois state competition, which is exciting on its own. However, Woodlawn's team continued to impress everyone by placing 5th overall, out of more than 50 teams. Special thanks to the parent volunteer coaches who worked with the students  Nice work!  Here is a list of our Science Olympians!

Finally, my best buddy is Tony Cundari.  I only refer to him as Tony Cundari when talking about him.  I am not sure why I call him by his full name, maybe it is to add clarity to which Tony I am talking about, but his is my only friend named Tony.   Tony Cundari and I are both in education, we are both Italian, relaxed, shoot about the same score in golf, we both like the White Sox and we have a similar sense of humor.  We were friends in college but really became friends after we graduated. Tony Cundari and my wife had the “if I am not married by 40 pact, we will marry each other.” The funny part of that is Tony Cundari is a 5’6” south side Italian and my wife is a 5’10” blonde north sider.  Anyways, Tony Cundari and I will call each other and immediately talk about something we observed or a frustration in our professional lives. We reference a line from the movie “Airplane” when have a tough day or week. When he calls and says, “Shirley, you can’t be serious”, I know that we need to get together.  My favorite thing that he says to me comes from a Far Side cartoon. He just says “Bernie Schnaubel is a moth” and I cannot help but to laugh. I am lucky to have my best buddy and I look forward to hearing from him whenever we can make time.

Search the internet for Gary Larson, Far Side Cartoon.  It is worth it for the laughs.
