Woodlawn Principal Blog 11/30/18

Snow in November.  I mean a real snowstorm where we missed a day of school kind of storm.  Wow! Anyways, we had a really good week here at Woodlawn. Our Culture Night on Wednesday was excellent and my plan is to make this evening special for all of our families.  The food that was represented from around the world was outstanding. Thank you to all of our families who participated and I cannot wait to do this again in the future. SEE PHOTOS

District 96 parents are asked to complete online the parent portion of the Illinois 5Essentials Survey by Jan. 18, 2019. Access the survey: https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/

As a parent, this is your opportunity to share your thoughts on important elements of your child’s school’s effectiveness. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains.

Fall Conferences

Our fall conferences went very well this year.  I know that some parents didn’t get as many conferences as they would have liked and we will be looking at that in the future, but from almost every parent that I spoke with, they loved the new format.

Finally, there is always some excitement when a snow day is announced.  Who can forget those days when we were kids? Watching the T.V. and hoping that your school district would get mentioned by the news or even better, Ray Raynor.  This past Monday, I woke up early and started the snow removal process. I personally believe that the snow plow leader has a personal vendetta against my driveway.  I mean that snow was piled up at least 3 feet high at the end of my driveway. I spent a long time just creating a path at the end of our driveway, making it possible to get a car out.  Exhausted, I walked into my house and said that this was a really wet and heavy snow, following it up with an expression that I had heard from my parents, calling it “heart attack snow”.  My son looked at me like I was crazy. I didn’t even think about it, as it was just something my parents and grandparents would just say. I began to think about some of my other “sayings” that originated long before myself.  My mom was big on saying “pneumonia weather” which happens on a nice day in the middle of winter. Here are a few more that either my family members said or I plan on saying.... Hopefully for a long time!

My parents/grandparents would say:

I am going to take a nap on the Davenport (meaning couch)

I’m going to rest my eyes

Put the leftovers in the icebox

Well isn’t this a pickle?

Kids Today

My sayings:

I sent you a message …(meaning I sent you a text)

When did this song become classic rock?

I’ll call a cab (dad, I already Ubered)
