Woodlawn Principal's Blog 11/16/18

The last Friday before Thanksgiving is here!  Is this school year flying by or what? We are looking forward to conferences next week and seeing as many of our parents as possible.  I am exceptionally proud of where we are as a school right now and all of the hard work our teachers and students have put in during this first trimester.

An Important Note About Student Progress Reports

Your student’s progress report is available for you to access online today–Friday, November 16, after 3 p.m. If you need assistance, please CLICK HERE for instructions to view your student’s progress report, to switch between your children’s progress reports, and more.

Pink/Positive Messages

Today was a special day at Woodlawn.  Upon the suggestion of a bunch of wonderful 7th grade girls, we wore pink to honor Rachel Vondrak.  On Monday, we will be putting up positive quotes and/or messages in the hallway. Students can create them and share them with their Flex teacher, lining the hallways with positivity.

Health Class

Each year, through our collaborative work with Elyssa's Mission, Woodlawn students learn how to identify depression through our Signs of Suicide Prevention Program.  Click here to see the SOS informational letter.

Culture Night

This is just a reminder that the upcoming Culture Night on Wednesday, November 28th from 6:00-8:00pm, is rapidly approaching. We have at least 32 families signed up from WL and CM with a variety of presentations and performances.  This looks to be a wonderful evening for our Woodlawn community.

Orchestra Concert

Outstanding job by our students and Ms. Wronkiewicz at the concert last night.  I am always amazed at the talent and commitment our orchestra members show. Great job!

Current Patriot Consortium Mathematics Placement Process

Over the last few years, Stevenson High School and the feeder middle schools have created a scope and sequence and aligned the curriculum to the Common Core Standards for Mathematics, as well as created common benchmarks for the end of each unit for both the Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 courses. The consortium has created criteria that defines the four strands of mathematical proficiency to highlight the attributes of a proficient mathematical thinker. The criteria are grouped into three categories (See chart on second page):

  • Procedural Skills & Fluency (How well you can correctly use mathematics.)

  • Conceptual Understanding (How well you utilize mathematical ideas, transfer your knowledge into new situations, and apply it to new contexts.)

  • Problem Solving with Adaptive Reasoning and Strategic Competence (How well you can apply strategies and sound reasoning.)

Over the course of the year, the mathematics teachers will be discussing these criteria with the students in class to create a portrait of each student. This portrait will be used to recommend the students into the mathematics course at Stevenson High School that matches their content knowledge as well as level of mathematics proficiency at this time.

As a district and consortium, it is our vision that each student move on to the next course in the sequence providing that there are not significant gaps in content knowledge. If there are significant gaps in content knowledge and a change in recommendation occurs, we will contact you. We feel that this process allows a mathematical picture of the student to develop over time, which will provide a more informed recommendation

Fall Conferences

Conferences will be held on Monday, November 19th from 5-7p.m. and Tuesday, November 20th from 2-7p.m. If you have any questions, call the Woodlawn main office.

Finally, I want to wish the Woodlawn community a peaceful and safe Thanksgiving. For those of you, like myself, who have college students returning home, enjoy the holiday ahead of you.  Regardless of age, it is so special to get the family together and share laughter and fun stories. Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday because in my world, it is all about being together with friends and family.  FYI, my wife is the oldest girl of 9 children and we get to host her family, my family and our closest friends. It will be a special time.

Woodlawn on our Commendable School designation

Congratulations to Woodlawn on our Commendable School designation.  We are amazing at so many things, and to see the way our students interact with each other on a daily basis makes me proud.
