Woodlawn Principal's Blog 10/26/18

Happy last Friday of October!  If you can believe it, November is here next week.  Wow. Last night, Woodlawn hosted 285 students at our fall party and it was a blast!  I am really proud of the students and once again, our PTO is amazing. Mr. Grana was wiped out by the time this event was over.  Too much excitement and it pushed my bedtime back past 9p.m.  Here are a couple of pictures from our event!

From the PTO

Parent/Teacher Conferences are just around the corner and the PTO Staff Hospitality Committee will be providing dinner for all Woodlawn teachers on Monday, November 19th.

From the Stand Strong Coalition

Next week we will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week, which is a opportunity to come together as a community and support our youth in making healthy choices. Most youth in our community are alcohol and drug-free and we want to continue to support this effort.  Thanks to our youth substance use prevention group, called Catalyst, we will celebrate our youth who are "too smart to start."

Look for a coupon coming home good for a free mini concrete mixer at Culver's!  Culver's wants to reward parents and children who commit to talking about the risks and consequences of drug use.  Catalyst and our community coalition, Stand Strong, has made this easy to do. On the coupon that will come home with your child will be a QR code (also below).  This QR code will take you to a google document where you will find the risks and consequences of teen marijuana use. Due to the push to legalize marijuana in our country, the perceived risk of harm by teens of this substance is at an all-time low.  As a community, we have to work even harder to educate youth on the facts of just how harmful this addictive substance is to them.

After reading the facts on marijuana use and discussing them with your child, complete the questions on the google form and hit "submit."   You will receive an email back with the code to active the Culver's coupon. Write in the numbers on the coupon and take it to any of the Culver's in our community--Lincolnshire, Buffalo Grove or Mundelein!  In addition, your child will receive a goodie bag compliments of Stand Strong Coalition and Catalyst!

Parents, your voice matters!  Substance abuse prevention research says parents are the #1 reason kids choose to be alcohol and drug-free. Many parents falsely believe that friends and the media are bigger influences in their child’s life.  Not true– actually, parents have the power!

Thank you for your partnership!

Conferences 2018

We will have a new system this year!  For years, parents have been asking for more than one conference with teachers.  Here is your opportunity! This year, parents will be able to sign up for conferences in 10 minute blocks. You still only get one conference per child, but all teachers will be set up in the gym or the cafeteria so that time can be best utilized.  You can sign up now using the link below! Go to your grade level, find your teacher and sign up for a time. I believe that this is going to be a great opportunity for our Woodlawn community to come together and celebrate the great things we do for our children.

Here are the details:

Conferences are Monday, November 19th from 5-7p.m. &  Tuesday, November 20th from 2-7p.m.

We are not having FLEX conferences.  If you have a flex question, any of the team members can answer the questions.

You get one 10 minute slot per teacher.

When a teacher has a full schedule, no more conferences will be added.

The last day to sign up will be Monday, November 19th at 2p.m.  After that, call the Woodlawn main office at 847-353-8500.

If conferences are full, we will work on other options.  Just contact the main office.

Finally, the golf outing was a success.  As a huge shock to all of my friends, I came in 4th place this year.  There were no wild celebrations, just a personal happiness that I performed better than two of my buddies.  Honestly, I don’t feel as though I golfed very well, it was just a matter of they were worse. Much worse. Moving on.  Our Fall Party was a huge success again this year. It made me think about my youth and cruising around the neighborhood with my buddies.  Around 6th grade I was able to get special permission from my mom to work the candy circuit from 4-7p.m. and man-o-man did I bring home the goods.  Coming back into the house, my brothers would tell me that they were in charge of checking the candy. Moments later, there would be a wrestling match to regain control.  I love my older brothers and I miss those days.
