Woodlawn Principal Blog 10/19/18

Happy Friday, October the 19th!  We have been in school for two months and we are rolling along.  Great things are happening in the classroom and we are moving toward our Fall Party and letting students wear their Halloween costumes to school at the end of the month.  Just a quick reminder that masks, weapons and bloody make-up is not allowed. Please make sure that the costume is school appropriate. If you have any doubt whether it is appropriate or not, it probably isn’t.  Enjoy the blog this week!

 Conferences 2018

We will have a new system this year!  For years, parents have been asking for more than one conference with teachers.  Here is your opportunity! This year, parents will be able to sign up for conferences in 10 minute blocks with as many teachers as they would like.  You still only get one conference per child, but all teachers will be set up in the gym or the cafeteria so that time can be best utilized. You can sign up now using the link below!  Go to your grade level, find your teacher and sign up for a time. I believe that this is going to be a great opportunity for our Woodlawn community to come together and celebrate the great things we do for our children.

Here are the details:

  • Conferences are Monday, November 19th from 5-7p.m. &  Tuesday, November 20th from 2-7p.m.
  •  We are not having FLEX conferences.  If you have a flex question, any of the team members can answer the questions.
  •  You get one 10 minute slot per teacher.
  •  When a teacher has a full schedule, no more conferences will be added.
  •  The last day to sign up will be Monday, November 19th at 2p.m.  After that, call the Woodlawn main office at 847-353-8500.

YOU MUST STOP!

The Buffalo Grove Police Department reports an increase in motorists passing stopped school buses that are loading and unloading students. Because students’ safety is our priority, officers will be monitoring areas where serious violations such as this are prevalent.

 Please review the law:

Drivers must stop before meeting or overtaking a school bus loading or unloading passengers on a TWO-lane roadway (even if there is a raised median dividing the roadway).

Drivers must remain stopped until the Stop arm on the school bus is no longer extended and the flashing lights are turned off (or the bus driver signals the driver to pass).

A driver failing to do so may be charged with the violation and receive a mandatory court appearance. Passing a stopped school bus has a fine of $500–$1200. The driving privileges of a person convicted of passing a stopped school bus will be suspended for 3 months for the first offense and one year for the second offense.

When is it permissible for a driver to pass a stopped school bus?

It is permissible when the driver is on a highway with FOUR or more lanes (at least two lanes in either direction) and is traveling in the opposite direction of the bus.

NEW *Culture Night*

I am really looking forward to this event!  I am hoping that every Woodlawn family is able to join us and be a part of this wonderful celebration!

On November 28th, Woodlawn and Country Meadows will come together for our inaugural, "This is Us... We are Woodlawn and Country Meadows" event!  Given the rich diversity of the cultures in our shared community, we are looking forward to engaging families and students in a night where we celebrate about our own culture, learn/celebrate the cultures of others, and build a sense of a shared WL/CM culture.

If your child and family are interested in participating in this event, please indicate so by completing this Google Form (English) or this Google Form (Spanish). We will be communicating the logistics of the event when we have a better understanding of how many participants we will have and how they prefer to participate.

Congrats to our soccer teams for winning the conference championship.  In the first year of having an all boys and an all girls team, Woodlawn swept the Patriot conference.  Way to go Wolves!!!!

Special Lunch

Thank you to the PTO for sponsoring our Special Lunch today.  Papa John’s pizza was a hit! In recent years, Woodlawn has had some pizza issues that I am not ready to acknowledge, so when the pizza was 5 minutes late to 8th grade lunch, I had some flashbacks.  All is well. Great job PTO.

Finally, I have a group of friends where we do a lot of fun things together.  Yes, it is my game of TAG group. (6th grade parents, for the last 6 years, each May we play a game of Tag.  See my blog posts from last May for details). This weekend is our annual golf outing. It is my year to pick the golf course, so I picked the most open and forgiving course possible, mostly because my golf game is horrendous.  In my many years of playing with this group, I tend to come in last place. Only twice did I have a 5th place finish. The thing is, only two of my buddies are legit golfers. So this year, I played a lot more golf and have the invitational on my “home” course.  I am about to make a BOLD prediction…Woodlawn community, I expect to finish no worse than 4th place. I have nothing to back this up...just a desire to finally finish at the top end of the lower half. This Sunday at noon, when I should be warm in my basement watching football, I will do everything in my power to make you all proud.  Wish me luck. This could happen. Stay positive. Be the ball.
