Woodlawn Principal Blog 9/21/18

We started school in the middle of August and next week will be the last week of September. Today was our first PTO Special Lunch and it was great to have all of our PTO volunteers in the lunchroom.  It is fun to see our 6th grade parents react to the energy of our students in 6th grade, the loudness of our 7th graders and just how old our 8th graders look.  There  are a bunch of items in the blog this week.

A Note From Mr. Grana

Occasionally, I will give you a heads up when something is going on in the global middle school world.  Things that children are attempting are becoming more and more dangerous. A couple of years ago it was the Cinnamon Challenge, while last year it was the Tide Pod challenge.  Recently, there have been middle school aged students participating in a game called the Choking Game. This game is highly dangerous and life threatening.
Please click HERE for information and articles on the game.

Thought Exchange Partnership

Woodlawn is seeking parents to fill  spots on our district Thought Exchange Partnership, formerly known as the Parent Review Committee! If you are looking for a way to get involved, be a voice for your school, and learn a lot, please consider joining. If you are interested in this opportunity, go to this link to express interest by September 28th! Please know this will be a lottery for the open spot. I will contact everyone once we have the member to let you know if you have been selected! The first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 11th in the evening.

Purpose:

To share with parents information regarding district goals and initiatives, curricular and instructional innovations, programs and other informational topics.  (i.e. District Goals, MAP and PARCC Results)

To review school board or school code required topics (i.e. Handbook, Discipline Policy, Grants, Calendar)

To understand parent perceptions and solicit feedback on school district topics to assist the district in communication and planning.

Lake County STEM Conference for 6-8 Grade Girls

Lake County is hosting a STEM Conference for middle school girls and their parents at Grayslake North High School on September 29th. This is the first time that a conference of this magnitude has been offered to all girls in Lake County. See the flyer on this link.

Finally, it is time.  No, it isn’t time for the Cubs, that will happen in 2 weeks.   No, it isn’t time for the Bears, although the defense is really looking good.  It is time for me to do one of my least favorite things... purchase a new car. When I say a new car, I mean a car new to me.  Through the years, I have had some tough luck with cars. My first car was a late 70’s Mustang. Not one of the cool late 60’s Mustang’s, this was the embarrassingly flimsy Mustang.  When I went away to college, I promptly fried out the tiny 4 cylinder engine. My next car was a 1970 Nova. The engine was a monster but it gobbled up the motor oil and I fried that engine as well.  The car I was most excited about back then was a Mercury Cougar. Big engine, maroon with “racing” stripes and best of all, a digital dashboard! (It was 1987) One problem, the car didn’t like cold weather. When I would go and start it, after the engine groaned a little, the clock would go to 00:00.  Game over! Needless to say, I haven’t had very reliable cars. Even now, something will go wrong and I am back to the car drawing board. So, as I try to decide between a new car, a certified used car, hybrid, 2.0 turbo, 3.6L V6, sunroof, moonroof, coupe, sedan, etc.. I am driving my poor wife crazy.  It is time to make a decision. Whatever gets decided, the car will face an early demise. Something weird will happen and a mechanic that I have yet to meet will tell me that there is no way this car can possible be fixed. I need to hire someone to pick a car out for me. Don't even get me started about the dealership process. Any advice will be appreciated.
