Lake County Young Ambassadors

The Lake County State's Attorney's Office is excited to announce that the Young Ambassadors Board is now accepting applications for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year.

The members of the Young Ambassadors Board are dedicated to serving and empowering their peers for the betterment of our community. These Ambassadors will lead by example and work together throughout Lake County, to raise awareness and to improve the well-being and education of our youth. Inaugural membership into the program is offered to students eighth grade through high school throughout Lake County and is administered by State's Attorney employees Carrie Wings and Melissa Burke.

The Lake County State's Attorney's Office Young Ambassadors Program encourages Lake County teens to participate in this program. Applications are now available on the Lake County State’s Attorney’s website, as well as attached to this email. The mission of the Young Ambassadors is not only to have a positive presence throughout their school, but to volunteer in the community of Lake County as well

Health Letter

Dear Parent/Guardian,

District 96 provides a comprehensive health curriculum that addresses an individual’s physical, mental, and social-emotional well-being. Within these broad categories, health teachers cover the topics of body systems, fitness and nutrition, illness prevention, first aid, personal safety, consumer health, bullying prevention, and decision-making.

Illinois state law also requires all school districts with a comprehensive health curriculum to provide instruction on specific health topics including cancer education, AIDS education and prevention, human growth and development, sexual abstinence until marriage, contraception, dating violence, sexual abuse prevention, Erin’s Law, and the Abandoned Newborn Protection Act.  In compliance with these state mandates, your child’s health teachers will address these specific topics by the end of eighth grade. The health curriculum is designed to introduce topics at the most age appropriate time. THIS LINK  information on both general and specific topics by grade level.

District 96 recognizes that parents hold the primary responsibility for their child’s education. As parents, you may elect to excuse your child from instruction on any health topic. If you choose this option, please submit a request, in writing, to the building principal, asking that your child be excused from class during the specific period of instruction.

Please note that parents may also arrange to preview instructional materials by contacting their school office.  If you have any questions, you may contact Andrea Penepacker, Health teacher at Woodlawn Middle School, at (847) 353-8500; or Ben Leven, Health teacher at Twin Groves Middle School at (847) 821-8946.

We hope you will find this information helpful as we begin a new school year.

Sincerely,

Julie A. Schmidt

Clubs/Study Halls

Here is a link to a list of our clubs and study hall times.

Woodlawn Is Active!

One of the best parts of our school is when the clubs and activities get rolling.  This week we began clubs, study halls, sports and our musical/crew rehearsals. It is great to see our school come to life with all of the energy that our students bring.

Thanks 6th Grade Pizza Lunch

Thank you to the PTO for supplying lunch and our “new” parents for passing out pizza to our 6th grade students on Wednesday. It was fun to see all of the parents in the building.

Curriculum Nights

They were a hit as our parents were able to walk the halls and see (on a mini scale) how your child goes through their day. I hope that everyone was able to meet their teachers and get a feel of what we do here at Woodlawn.

Attention District 96 Athletes

The Patriot Middle School Conference has made some changes to the format.

For boys and girls basketball and volleyball there will be two teams per grade.  There will be an "A" team and a "B" team. No longer will there be two equal teams.

Soccer will have a girl team and a boy team.  6th, 7th and 8th graders will be allowed to tryout for soccer.

Labor Day Defined

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Finally, I am struggling with my New Year’s resolution.  I made a commitment to improve my golf game and I have fallen way short of my goal.  In reality, my average score has improved slightly, but the overall quality of my performance is still awful.  For a guy who played sports or was athletic for most of his life, I should have improved by now. I get really annoyed when someone just starts playing and they are a natural.  How unfair is that? Meanwhile, I hit into the woods, water, rough or anywhere except the fairway. I haven’t thrown my clubs...but the idea has crossed my mind. Most frustrating is when I have a WISH shot.  WISH stands for Why Is it Still Here? I often take pleasure when I see a professional golfer really mess up. I feel that it is important that they experience the same things that I do each time I play. Does that make me an awful person?  So this holiday weekend, I hope to get out and hit the links. The problem is, one good shot and you are right back on the, “Hey, I am not so bad at this” wagon. Have a great holiday weekend!
