Woodlawn Principal's Blog 8/24/18

The first full of school is in the books!  It is fun to see how quickly the students get into a routine and get back to the business of school.  I am looking forward to seeing all of the parents on the respective grade level curriculum nights this week.  Special thanks to the PTO who provided the staff with a wonderful back to school breakfast yesterday.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF 6TH GRADERS

The Woodlawn PTO is hosting a Welcome to Woodlawn lunch on Wed., Aug. 29. All 6th graders will get a free pizza lunch with dessert and water as well as a special Class of 2021 gift. (Don’t tell the students, but the gift is a pencil case which will be great for holding their iPad “crayons”)

If your child does not want the pizza lunch, he or she can bring lunch or buy lunch in the cafeteria that day.

All parents of 6th graders are invited and welcome to attend to help serve lunch to the kids and meet other 6th grade parents. Come see what a real-life middle school cafeteria looks like!

If you are planning on attending, we ask that you please sign up on the Volunteer Registration Form on the toolkit. Log in to the  PTO MEMBERSHIP TOOLKIT, click on the 2018-2019 Volunteer Registration Form, and scroll down to Year-Round Opportunities–Grade Level Parties – 6th Grade.

iPads-Technology Information for the 2018-2019 School Year

The policy concerning iPad damage will be different this year. This change is reflected below and in greater detail in the 2018-19 Student Handbook. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Logitech Crayon

I know that it wasn’t on the supply list but 7th & 8th grade parents, you may want to purchase a pencil case for your child.  They can keep their "crayon" in a pencil case.

Curriculum Nights

It is almost here!  Curriculum night will be this week for our parents.  Each night begins in the gym at 7p.m. for an informational talk with myself & Mrs. Garlick, followed by parents going through the schedule of their child.  You will want to get here early because the parents cannot wait to hear from Mrs. Garlick and I. It will be riveting. Again, 7-8:30p.m. to learn all about what your child will be learning this year.

6th grade will be Monday, August 27th

7th & 8th grade will be on Tuesday, August 28th.

Approved Snacks: What Parents Need to Know

The District has revised the APPROVED SNACK LIST, adding more items to this list to give families more choices. The items the list includes are free of the Top 8 allergens: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat.

This list includes the foods that are approved for students' Daily Snacks. It also includes (for children in Grades 1–5) foods approved for Special Events such as birthday treats for a class or for PTO Halloween, Winter, or Valentine's Day parties.

IMPORTANT: All items for Daily Snacks, with the exception of fruits and vegetables, MUST be prepackaged to allow staff to easily check that snacks meet the approved requirements.

Director of Educational Services Amy Gluck also has provided responses to FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs) about foods approved for daily snacks/special events.

For your convenience, find links to the District 96 Approved Snack List and Approved Snack List FAQs on the homepage of the District 96 website and the homepage of each school.

Attention District 96 Athletes

The Patriot Middle School Conference has made some changes to the format.

For boys and girls basketball and volleyball there will be two teams per grade.  There will be an "A" team and a "B" team. No longer will there be two equal teams.

Soccer will have a girl team and a boy team.  6th, 7th and 8th graders will be allowed to tryout for soccer.

MAP Testing and Picture Day went really well this past week.  I am very happy with the start of our school year.

Finally, I dropped off my third freshman at college.  For those of you who are new to the saga, I have four children. My oldest is 23, I have a senior in college, my son is now a freshman and my daughter is a sophomore in high school.  Times are different. I remember bringing my boom box, baseball gear and clothes to college. My son (who will be attending a very pricey college in Milwaukee) brought his computer, TV, X-Box, gaming chair, iPad, wireless headphones, portable speaker clothes, including 15 hoodies.  My dorm room was ridiculously small and since is was an all guys dorm, it had a special, permanent scent. We did have a window fan, but trying to catch a breeze was next to impossible. My son was lucky enough to get into a brand new dorm that smelled of fresh paint, has the latest technology available in the rooms, laminate flooring and LED lights.  Oh wait, I forgot to mention air conditioning. Let me repeat that...AIR CONDITIONING! I was dropped off and had to figure out my schedule and where everything was at on campus. The modern day college student has a 3 day weekend of orientation, making sure they understand how everything works and why they do it that way. Clearly, my group had it rough.  That being said, I am so excited and happy for his opportunities. He is the best kid and my hope is that the wife (Julie- I will refer to her in my blog often and she often threatens to write a rebuttal) and I have raised him well, giving him the personal strength and fortitude to succeed. As I mentioned earlier, I have two in college right now. I am 3-3 on dropping off kids and getting emotional about it.  The wife is 0-3 on getting emotional because she knows that he will have the best time of his life. If anyone needs their lawn mowed, I have reasonable rates.
