Woodlawn Principal's Blog 8/10/18

Sorry for the delay on getting the blog out today.  Woodlawn lost power at 1:30p.m. so I am cranking this out from home!  I am so excited to get our school year started! The Woodlawn staff will be back in the building first thing on Monday morning and I simply cannot wait.  Tuesday will be even better because it is time for locker set up and the stars of our show will be back in the building. I am hoping to talk with every parent and student as they return for our 2018-19 “season”.

Approved Snacks: What Parents Need to Know

The District has revised the APPROVED SNACK LIST, adding more items to this list to give families more choices. The items the list includes are free of the Top 8 allergens: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat.

This list includes the foods that are approved for students' Daily Snacks. It also includes (for children in Grades 1–5) foods approved for Special Events such as birthday treats for a class or for PTO Halloween, Winter, or Valentine's Day parties.

IMPORTANT: All items for Daily Snacks, with the exception of fruits and vegetables, MUST be prepackaged to allow staff to easily check that snacks meet the approved requirements.

Director of Educational Services Amy Gluck also has provided responses to FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs) about foods approved for daily snacks/special events.

For your convenience, find links to the District 96 Approved Snack List and Approved Snack List FAQs on the homepage of the District 96 website and the homepage of each school.

Additionally, Woodlawn is setting times for students to have a snack in class.  I know that this is a very challenging topic for some parents, so please contact me you have questions or concerns.  [email protected] or 847-353-8500.

iPads-Technology Information for the 2018-2019 School Year

The students will receive their iPads during class on the first few days of school.

The policy concerning iPad damage will be different this year. This change is reflected below and in greater detail in the 2018-19 Student Handbook. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Finally, I remember the start of school like it was yesterday.  Middle school was a different animal because we changed classes.  I really liked my middle school teachers because they seemed to be much more relaxed and you could see that they enjoyed what they were doing.  Our art teacher was married to my English teacher. I remember that being the first time that I really looked at teachers as people who had lives outside of school.  My P.E. teacher was a rough and tumble veteran who believed in discipline first, physical activity second. The teacher I remember most was my homeroom teacher, Linda Ellis.  Mrs. Ellis was the nicest person and probably the best teacher I had to that point. She knew how to read me, motivate me and make me get the most out of myself. We were all just an awkward bunch trying to make the leap from being little kids to “cool” middle schoolers (and in my day it was called Jr. High).  Braces, bell bottom pants and pimples. Does it make you miss your Jr. High days? How many people say, “Man o man I had a great middle school/Jr. High experience?” That is the reason the Woodlawn staff and myself try to make it fun our students.

See you Tuesday!  And no, I will not be wearing my bell bottom pants.
