Woodlawn Principal's Blog 3/16/18

This 8th grade class is awesome!  I was able to spend time in some of the rooms yesterday as our students were introduced to a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) activity and they just went with it.  I am being honest when I tell you how great this group of young ladies and men are doing on a daily basis. Parents, you should be proud. Mrs. Miller and I had a talk about how much we enjoy this group and since she and I have been around from the start of Woodlawn, we compare them to other really nice groups of students.

DuFour Award

Would you like to take 45 minutes and hear about what we do as a Professional Learning Community to make sure your child has a great educational experience in D96?  Come on out to our DuFour Award celebration on Wednesday, April 11th at 7p.m. Mrs. Bird and I will present a brief overview of what it means to be a PLC and how other districts, including Stevenson follow this model.  As promised last week, celebration cake and punch will be served.  For you men who are a little frugal, consider this date night.  Sell it as a show and dessert. I hope to see many of our Woodlawn parents here.

Here is my public service announcement.  The following section has very little to do with Woodlawn.  If you don't find value in it, do not read it.  You will save 30 seconds of your life.

Finally, I try to go through life and not look like a fool. Live and learn.

Occasion #1: I am at the grocery store, a place where I often run into people that I should know, when I see someone looking at me waving.  I immediately go through my protocol of, 1) put a smile on your face and 2) quickly remember who this person is that is aggressively waving at me.

“Oh no... I have no idea who this person is but they are absolutely waving at me.  Figure it out...they are taking steps toward me...just wave and keep that silly smile on your face...”

So, I waved.

When the person walked right past me and gave a hug to their friend 20 feet behind me, I picked up what little pride I had left, and headed to the dairy section.  Nice.

Occasion #2:  9 hours later, I am at dinner with my wife and our friends.  Soon after we order, I see someone looking at me waving from across the room.

“You have got to be kidding me."

I am in the middle of the restaurant, so they could easily be waving at someone else.  I immediately go back to my protocol of, 1) put a smile on your face and 2) quickly remember who this person is that is aggressively waving at me. Scratch that, I am not smiling this time.

“Why is this happening to me?  I have to make a split decision about the wave/no wave decision.  I’ve got it, I am going to give it the quick glance over my shoulder.  Cool, here we go. Dang it, no one waving behind me. Oh man, they are still waving.  Think Greg, think. Who is that person?”

Believe me when I tell you that I am stressed out waiting for my guacamole.

“I’ve got it, play it off as though you really weren’t looking that way.  Perfect, that will work. I mean, how rude can it possibly be to not acknowledge someone?”

At this point, the person stopped waving and went back to their meal.  I didn’t really want to look, but it was like trying to drive by a accident without giving her table a glance.  I kept looking and each time, made eye contact with the waver.

“Ugh! She saw me looking again.”

After a few minutes of this torture, I believe this person had enough of my awkwardness.

“She is getting out of her seat.  Good, she is leaving. Oh no, she is walking this way.  I am not falling for this one again!”

As the sweet, former Woodlawn parent said, “Hello Mr. Grana.  I am Sarah Smith (made up name), my girls went through Woodlawn 10 years ago.”  All I could think about was my epic failure at the wave/no wave situations of the day.  Live & learn. Nice.
