Woodlawn Principal's Blog 3/9/18

Student led conferences were a huge success.  I like to tease the students as they enter the building, asking them if they are nervous about what their parents are about to find out about them.  Thank you to everyone who was able to attend. I have a number of items for the blog this week.

Regarding current events in the news

Parents, please take a moment to read this MESSAGE and contact our school office if you have questions.

 DuFour Award Explanation

Mark your calendar.  No, seriously...mark it now because you will forget and I don’t want to be here by myself.  I have had so many Woodlawn parents congratulate me on behalf of the school, but they don’t quite understand what it is all about.  The Wednesday following Spring Break, Wednesday, April 11th, we will be hosting an information night about what a Professional Learning Community is and how Woodlawn has risen to this highest level. We will have some celebration cake and punch so even if you don’t want to listen to me, there is a treat waiting for you.  April 11th, 7p.m. Woodlawn. Mark your calendar now.

Finally, my 15 year old daughter has her driving permit.  First, a community service announcement... The Lake Zurich DMV is the best kept secret in Lake County.  I was in and out in 15 minutes, with the workers being exceptionally nice. You are welcome. Now, I have been through the student driver battles before, three times to be exact.  My oldest son was Mr. Confidence 2011 and needed to be taken down a peg, my oldest daughter was a bit tentative with the gas pedal (not any longer) and my younger son took some wide turns, but is probably my best driver.  I decided a long time ago that I would teach the children how to drive. Easy decision for me. My wife was taught how to drive by her Chicago Police Captain father who held the belief that you needed to get the stick shift car into fourth gear on a sidestreet by the end of the block or you weren’t ready to continue. My wife is a lovely person but she turns into a different human being behind the wheel (I hope that she isn’t reading this), much like people going through our Woodlawn parking lot...slow down.  I am much, much calmer. Hence, I am the family driver education instructor. This time, as the self proclaimed driving guru, it feels different. My daughter, who is so confident with her school work, social circles and athletics is a scared little puppy (makes me think of Bella, I miss that little thing) on the road. I try to keep my voice calm when I am in the passenger seat, but as you are bearing down on the guard rail, it is touch to keep that straight face. I will try to update you on our progress and man-o-man do I hope that there is progress. Wish me luck.
