Happy Winter Break Twin Groves! We hope everyone has a very Happy New Year and is looking forward to some well-deserved time off. As we are entering into the second half of our school year, and transitioning to the colder months, we thought it would be important to highlight some strategies to help our students sustain their momentum during these winter months.

Return to Bedtime Routines
While it’s easy for kids to fall into a new sleep pattern during special occasions, such as winter break, it’s essential to help them transition back to their regular bedtime routines as school starts up again. Quality and consistent sleep is key to keeping kids energized and focused throughout their school day. Gradually adjusting bedtime in the days leading up to school can help ease the transition.
Discuss Goals for the New Year
Talking with your child about their goals for the new year is a great way to motivate them as they begin the second half of the school year. Whether the goals are academic, personal, physical, or somewhere in between, having something to look forward to and work toward can inspire focus and determination. Encourage them to set both big and small goals and celebrate progress along the way.
Focus on Celebrations
Starting on a positive note is key to building momentum. Celebrate achievements both big and small. From personal accomplishments like improving a grade or scoring a goal, to small victories like waking up on time to their alarm clock, acknowledging these successes helps create a positive and encouraging environment.
Validate your Child’s Feelings
It’s normal for kids to have mixed feelings about returning to school after a break. While some may feel excited to see their friends and teachers and settle back into a routine, others might feel anxious or apprehensive. Both feelings are completely valid. Encourage your child to share how they’re feeling and listen to them without judgment. When kids feel heard and understood, they’re more likely to open up and feel supported.
Emphasize the Importance of Self-Care
Self-care is a vital tool for managing stress and staying balanced. Help your child develop habits that allow them to relax and recharge, such as:
-Listening to upbeat music
-Practicing deep breathing exercises
-Doing activities they enjoy (reading, drawing, sports, etc.)
-Spending quality time with loved ones

Encouraging self-care routines now will provide long-term benefits, helping your child stay calm and focused as they tackle the weeks ahead.

By focusing on routines, goals, celebrations, and self-care while validating their feelings, you can help your child make a smooth and positive transition back to school after a break.

Current Patriot Consortium Mathematics Placement Process- 8th-Grade Parents
The consortium has created criteria that define the four strands of mathematical proficiency to highlight the attributes of a proficient mathematical thinker. The criteria are grouped into three categories.

-Procedural Skills & Fluency (How well you can correctly use mathematics.)
-Conceptual Understanding (How well you utilize mathematical ideas, transfer your knowledge into new situations, and apply it to new contexts.)
-Problem Solving with Adaptive Reasoning and Strategic Competence (How well you can apply strategies and sound reasoning.)

Over the course of the year, the mathematics teachers will be discussing these criteria with the students in class to create a portrait of each student. This portrait will be used to recommend the students to the mathematics course at Stevenson High School that matches their content knowledge as well as their level of mathematics proficiency at this time.

As a district and consortium, it is our vision that each student moves on to the next course in the sequence providing that there are no significant gaps in content knowledge. If there are significant gaps in content knowledge and a change in recommendation occurs, we will contact you. We feel that this process allows a mathematical picture of the student to develop over time, which will provide a more informed recommendation.

Course Sequence for Core 8 Students
-Algebra 1 with Mentor Math or Algebra 1 with Math Guided Study will be recommended if students need to reinforce and refresh targets in Units 1-4
-Algebra 1 will be recommended if students have mastered targets in Units 1-4

Course Sequence for Algebra 1 Students
-Geometry will be recommended if students need to reinforce and refresh targets in Units 1-4
-Geometry AB/BC will be recommended if students have mastered targets in Units 1-4

Course Sequence for Geometry Students
-Algebra 2 will be recommended if students need to reinforce and refresh targets in Units 1-3
-Algebra 2 AB/BC will be recommended if students have mastered targets in Units 1-3
