What’s Happening at Twin Groves?
PE: We have been very busy in PE and having tons of fun!  We just wrapped our Team Handball unit where students participated in either a Pro or Rec league based on their choice.  We also switched up our schedule a bit during IAR testing.  Since our students were spending a lot of time testing and had shortened class periods, we took the opportunity to have a game week so our students could run around and have fun!  Students were working hard on many components of fitness during these games without even realizing it.  Some of our games included Capture the Flag, Yoshi Tag, and Flag Tag!

We have just two rotations left in PE with Group C in Health now.  During this rotation, we like to offer repeats of the students’ favorite units for those who may have been in Health, while also bringing in something new.  This unit is what we call an “Elective” unit where students have an opportunity to choose their unit for the whole rotation.  Their choices were badminton, volleyball, or pickleball.

Lastly, we are excited to be able to play along with the Chicago weather and get outside when we can.  Please let this serve as a reminder that we will try to go outside when we can and students are welcome to wear either their TG sweatshirt/sweatpants as their PE uniform or they are allowed to wear their own personal sweatshirt/sweatpants as long as they are over their PE clothes and something different than what they wore to school that day.  We recommend keeping an extra sweatshirt in their PE locker for when they need it.

Health: The sixth-grade students are learning about the body systems and how they are interconnected. Students have gained insights about hygiene and how to keep their bodies clean.  Sixth graders have also learned about the physical, social, and emotional changes that happen when they go through puberty.  The seventh graders have been learning about drug education which includes addiction and treatment options. Students also worked on a research project to further enhance their knowledge of specific drugs.  The eighth graders have been studying about communicable and non-communicable diseases.  Students have been learning about vaccines and how health insurance works.  Students also had a refresher course on SOS (Signs of Suicide) with the help of our amazing social workers.

Art: The 6th grade just glazed their frogs and turtles.  We are now starting to work on a landscape painting inspired by the Hudson River School.  7th grade is glazing their clay coil vessels.  Then they will continue work on their Andy Warhol inspired printmaking project.  8th grade is starting to learn about typography - the art of fonts and formatting.  They will use this knowledge to design a quote painting.

Music: Happy Spring Everyone! Music is in full swing this time of the Trimester. In this unit, all grades have been discussing the difference between the functions of melody and harmony in music. In 6th grade, students have been playing pianos. We focused on the C major position and talked about how to independently practice and reflect upon our music. In 7th and 8th grade, students are playing guitars and have explored the different types of guitars in music. 7th grade has been playing simple chords while 8th grade has been plucking notes and playing chords while reading TABS. Each grade is working towards a project where they will perform their newly learned skills for the class.

TASOL: In TASOL, all grades have started working on their sewing projects. Sixth-grade students are learning new sewing skills through a pillow with a design of their choice.  All 7th and 8th graders have picked out a small 3D pillow to complete over the next few weeks.  They will be using three different stitches and improving their sewing techniques.  Later this month,  students will start working in the kitchens with a variety of recipes.

Attention 7th Grade Parents
It has come to my attention that there is some confusion regarding a Washington DC trip planned for next February, intended for the current 7th graders and next year's 8th graders. It's important to clarify that this trip is not and has never been a school-sponsored event. Consequently, the district does not distribute information directly to parents regarding this trip.
The company that hosts this trip is called WorldStrides.
I have become aware that there is information about the trip being advertised on Facebook. Please look at the District 96 Moms and Dads Facebook page for more information.
If you have any questions or need further information, please reach out to the school office at 847-821-8946.

Newcomer Coffee & Conversation is May 6
District 96 is hosting a spring Newcomer Coffee & Conversation at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 6, in the Ivy Hall Mat Room.

For planning purposes, attendees are asked to fill out this form: https://forms.gle/gmJJ6sD3uKsTzMa59.  The sign-up deadline is May 2.

This is an event only for parents and guardians.

The Newcomer Coffee & Conversation is an informal opportunity for parents and guardians of newly registered students to ask questions and share their thoughts ~ with other parents and staff ~ about their experiences in the district. These parents might be experiencing the District’s social customs and teaching practices for the first time, just as their students have, and can glean from the experiences of others.

If you missed the last Newcomer Coffee in December, we encourage you to attend this conversation. You are welcome to be a part of this conversation even if you were able to attend the event, so we can hear how you are adjusting to the D96 culture.

Coffee and other refreshments will be served.
Questions?  Contact Lubna K. Andrabi, D96’s Community Parent Liaison, @ [email protected] or 847.459.4260, ext. 8136.

6th Grade Dental Forms Needed
Dear Parents/Guardians of District 96 6th Grade Students:

Please note that your child’s completed dental examination is now due, per Illinois school law. The deadline for the dental examination is no later than May 15 of the current school year.  Proof of this required dental examination must have been completed within eighteen months prior to the May 15 deadline.
If you haven’t already done so, please make an appointment with your child’s dentist for a dental examination, have him and/or her complete the required form, and return it to your child’s school nurse.

State of Illinois Proof of Dental Examination Form
In the event that you are unable to fulfill this requirement, the state of Illinois does permit a waiver of the examination.

State of Illinois Dental Waiver Form
Dental examination forms, as well as dental waiver forms, can be downloaded from the District’s website.

If you have any questions, please contact Cindy Borzych at [email protected] or call the Twin Groves office at 847-821-8946.
