April 8th Eclipse
On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross over the United States. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. In northern Illinois, there will be a partial eclipse. Changes will become noticeable around 12:30 p.m. Central Time with the height of the eclipse occurring at 2:07 pm.

KCSD96 District Office staff are working to provide an opportunity for students and staff members to safely view the eclipse. This includes providing special viewing glasses and training on how to appropriately use them and safely view the eclipse.

Students who want to safely view the eclipse outside on April 8 will be able to do that under the supervision of their teacher. We will also have opportunities for students to indirectly view the eclipse from inside the school if parents do not want them to be outside. If you do not want your child to be outside during the eclipse, please contact your school’s principal or assistant principal to let them know by Sunday, April 7th at 8 PM.

Staff and students will be provided with eclipse glasses and the safety overview on April 8 so that they can safely view the eclipse.

Fostering Academic Resilience: Equipping Your Middle Schooler for Success
As we guide our middle schoolers through these challenging academic years, it's essential to recognize the importance of building resilience alongside academic growth. Resilience, the ability to bounce back from setbacks and adversity, plays a pivotal role in shaping our children's success and well-being both in school and beyond.
While academic achievements are important, nurturing resilience in our children equips them with the skills needed to navigate the obstacles they'll face throughout their lives. By fostering resilience, we empower our students to persevere in the face of challenges, develop problem-solving skills, and maintain a positive outlook even when things get tough. Below, you will find some examples of ways to promote resilience.
Embrace a Growth Mindset: Encourage your child to view challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. Help them understand that abilities can be developed through effort and perseverance.

Encourage Perseverance: Teach your child to persist in the face of setbacks. Remind them that setbacks are a natural part of the learning process and that resilience is built through overcoming challenges.

Promote Self-Reflection: Encourage your child to reflect on their experiences and identify strategies that have helped them overcome obstacles in the past. Help them recognize their strengths and areas for growth.

Provide Supportive Guidance: Offer guidance and support when your child encounters difficulties, but also allow them to solve problems independently whenever possible. Building resilience requires experiencing and overcoming challenges firsthand.

Celebrate Progress: Celebrate your child's efforts and progress, regardless of the outcome. Acknowledge their hard work, perseverance, and resilience, reinforcing the importance of these qualities.

Model Resilience: Be a role model for resilience by demonstrating perseverance, adaptability, and positive coping strategies in your own life. Share stories of how you've overcome challenges and encourage open communication about resilience with your child.
By prioritizing the development of resilience alongside academic achievement, we're setting our middle schoolers up for success not only in school but also in life. We can empower our students to face challenges with courage, determination, and resilience.

6th Grade Dental Forms Needed
Dear Parents/Guardians of District 96 6th Grade Students:

Please note that your child’s completed dental examination is now due, per Illinois school law. The deadline for the dental examination is no later than May 15 of the current school year.  Proof of this required dental examination must have been completed within eighteen months prior to the May 15 deadline.
If you haven’t already done so, please make an appointment with your child’s dentist for a dental examination, have him and/or her complete the required form, and return it to your child’s school nurse.

State of Illinois Proof of Dental Examination Form
In the event that you are unable to fulfill this requirement, the state of Illinois does permit a waiver of the examination.

State of Illinois Dental Waiver Form
Dental examination forms, as well as dental waiver forms, can be downloaded from the District’s website.
