What’s Happening at Twin Groves?
PE: As we closed out the month of November, students finished up their basketball unit, where we offered students a choice of 3 different leagues:  Pro, Intermediate and Scooter basketball.  Each league was geared towards students with different ability and interest levels in basketball.  We also continued our fitness days on Mondays (Cardio) and Thursdays (Strength), with our heart rate monitors and class competitions.  Students are having fun and working hard!

Group B will transition to Health today while the rest of the students get sorted into leagues for our badminton unit.  Again, students will have the option of participating in either a Pro or a Rec league for this sport.  We look forward to some great badminton action!

We hope everyone enjoys their Holiday break and we will look forward to seeing all the kids back on 12/9.

Health: The sixth-grade students are working on first aid for this rotation.  Students are learning about choking, EDITH plans, hypothermia, burns, and much more.  In seventh grade students are learning about stress, Signs of Suicide, depression, and healthy relationships.  We will be having OMNI Youth Services located here in BG come in to work on healthy ways to deal with stress.  The eighth graders will be learning about nutrition.  Students will be creating a nutrition plan for a client along with a fitness plan.

Art: Off to a good start!  6th grade finished making turtles and frogs out of clay.  Now they are working on landscape paintings inspired by the Hudson River School.  7th grade is finishing up a printmaking project inspired by Pop artist Andy Warhol.  The students carved their favorite cartoon character into a rubber block and stamped multiple layers of it.  8th grade spent time drawing the facial features and learning about portrait artists Chuck Close and Frida Kahlo.  We used that knowledge and practice as we were molding a bust out of clay.  Molding a face is quite difficult but they are doing a great job with it!

Music: This month Music we focused on the fundamentals of music by breaking down the difference between beat and rhythm. We then discussed the function of tempo in music and how this changes the speed of the beat. The students then applied that knowledge to the drum by practicing simple and complex rhythms on various parts of the bucket. 6th graders worked on playing these patterns together and performing them as an ensemble. 7th graders investigated how to accompany someone by playing the drums to the beat of a song. 8th graders focused on independence as a performer as they each played their own rhythmic patterns while different combinations were being played.

TASOL: TASOL has been focusing on career choices in 7th and 8th grade.  Each student has been exploring their interests, skills, and abilities through different surveys. Students used these surveys to choose a career to research and create a presentation for the class. When we return in January, we will start working on our sewing projects. In 6th grade, we have been looking at family functions and created a family crest to represent those functions within each individual's family. Students are currently exploring different career clusters and have started creating their own resumes. Enjoy the break and see you in 2024!

District 96 Hosts a Newcomer Coffee & Conversation
District 96 hosts a Newcomer Coffee & Conversation for parents and guardians of newly registered students, to give them an opportunity to ask questions and share information about their transition.

This year’s Coffee starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 19, at Ivy Hall Elementary School (Mat Room), 1072 Ivy Hall Lane, Buffalo Grove.

It is an informal opportunity for these new parents and guardians to ask questions and share their thoughts ~ with other parents and staff ~ about their experiences in the district. These parents might be experiencing the District’s social customs and teaching practices for the first time, just as their students have, and can glean from the experiences of others.

New parents/guardians who missed the New Family Tours in August are encouraged to attend this conversation.  Those who did attend the tours are welcome to join this conversation to share how they are adjusting to the District 96 culture.

Coffee and other refreshments will be served.

For planning purposes, RSVP by December 13 at LINK.

This is an event only for parents and guardians.

Got questions?  Email Lubna K. Andrabi, Community Parent Liaison, at [email protected].

Current Patriot Consortium Mathematics Placement Process- 8th Grade Only (REPEAT)

The consortium has created criteria that define the four strands of mathematical proficiency to highlight the attributes of a proficient mathematical thinker. The criteria are grouped into three categories (See chart on second page):

-Procedural Skills & Fluency (How well you can correctly use mathematics.)
-Conceptual Understanding (How well you utilize mathematical ideas, transfer your knowledge into new situations, and apply it to new contexts.)
-Problem Solving with Adaptive Reasoning and Strategic Competence (How well you can apply strategies and sound reasoning.)

Over the course of the year, the mathematics teachers will be discussing these criteria with the students in class to create a portrait of each student. This portrait will be used to recommend the students to the mathematics course at Stevenson High School that matches their content knowledge as well as level of mathematics proficiency at this time.

As a district and consortium, it is our vision that each student moves on to the next course in the sequence providing that there are no significant gaps in content knowledge. If there are significant gaps in content knowledge and a change in recommendation occurs, we will contact you. We feel that this process allows a mathematical picture of the student to develop over time, which will provide a more informed recommendation.

Course Sequence for Bridge Algebra 1 Students

-Algebra 1 with Mentor Math or Algebra 1 with Math Guided Study will be recommended if students need to reinforce and refresh targets in Units 1-4
-Algebra 1 will be recommended if students have mastered targets in Units 1-4

Course Sequence for Algebra 1 Students

-Geometry will be recommended if students need to reinforce and refresh targets in Units 1-4
-Geometry AB/BC will be recommended if students have mastered targets in Units 1-4

Course Sequence for Geometry Students
-Algebra 2 will be recommended if students need to reinforce and refresh targets in Units 1-3
-Algebra 2 AB/BC will be recommended if students have mastered targets in Units 1-3
