What’s happening at TG?
Health: In the first rotation for health 6th graders will be diving into decision-making and how to make good decisions.  We will look at the impact of their decisions on others and how they can improve their decision-making.  Seventh graders will be investigating the health triangle and the three aspects of it.  We will first look into self-esteem and goal setting as we begin this first trimester.  Eighth graders will be looking into human sexuality this rotation.  We will be discussing the reproductive systems, contraception including abstinence, sexually transmitted infections, the “Safe Haven” law, sexting laws, and sexual harassment.

PE: In PE we just wrapped up our soccer unit, which was divided up by a rec league option or pro league option, student choice.  After our mini Fall break, we will begin a football unit, with the same options as soccer.  We will also continue our cardio days, and our class vs. class, vs. class competition, which by the way has been very close between all classes.  Please consider buying the PTO sweatpants and sweatshirts, as the weather is beginning to change.

Art: All 3 grades are working with clay.  6th grade is making a frog or turtle.  The 7th grade is making a large coil pot.  The 8th grade is making a clay bust.  Once the projects dry and are bisque-fired the students will have access to all kinds and colors of glazes to give their work color and shine!

TASOL: Students in 7th and 8th grade finished the money management unit last week. Each student looked at possible incomes while planning different short, mid, and long-term goals. They discussed budgets and how to make choices between needs and wants. We are moving forward to our sewing unit. All 7th and 8th graders have picked out a small 3D pillow to complete over the next few weeks. Sixth graders recently completed the career unit by creating their own resumes. They started working on their sewing projects which consisted of a pillow with detail using three different stitches.  Later this month, all students will start working in the kitchens with a variety of new recipes.

MUSIC: In this unit, all grades are discussing the difference between the functions of melody and harmony in music. In 6th grade, students have been playing pianos. We focused on the C major position and talked about how to independently practice and reflect upon our music. In 7th and 8th grade, students are playing guitars and have explored the different types of guitars in music. 7th grade has been playing simple chords while 8th grade has been plucking notes while reading TABS. Each grade is working towards a project where they will compose a melodic and/or harmonic line for their instrument and perform in small groups for the class.

Safety Drill
On October 11th, Twin Groves will be conducting a Law Enforcement Safety Drill. Students will be evacuating the building during the drill. If the weather does not cooperate, we will reschedule the drill and communicate the rescheduled drill date.

In compliance with the Safety Drill Act, parents have the right to exempt their child from the Law Enforcement Drill.
If you do not wish your child to participate in the Law Enforcement Safety Drill, please contact Jessica Barnes at [email protected].  The administration will arrange for an alternative review of safety procedures with your child.
If we do not hear from you, we will assume your child has permission to participate in the drill.

Lake County STEM for Girls Conference
We are excited to share that the Lake County STEM for Girls Conference is back!  The conference hosts women from various STEM fields who work with the attending students by engaging in hands-on activities with real-world applications. Each session is interactive and inspiring! Girls in grades 6th-8th are invited to attend.
We have a STEM fair (with lots of goodies) and also invite parents/guardians to attend adult sessions to learn more about saving for college, how to support students in high school academic paths and mindfulness. We have a fantastic keynote and an enthusiastic closing for both students and parents!
This year the conference is being held at Vernon Hills High School on November 4th, 2023.   We've attached a flyer to this email and can't wait to hear how it goes when your child attends.
Registration is open!
If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].
