What’s Happening at TG?
PE:  We are in the home stretch and final Health rotation with Group D in Health until 5/25.  All students will participate in the Fun Run on 5/26 and all 6th/7th-grade students will finish the year out in PE from 5/30-6/2.  Our 8th graders will clean out their PE lockers on 5/19 and our 6th/7th graders will clean out their PE lockers on 5/30.

PE classes gave students a choice between Pickball and Choice for their final unit.  We have been able to get outside and enjoy the weather during our activities on most days, which has been great!  We hope everyone enjoys their summer and we look forward to seeing everyone in August!

Health: The sixth-grade students are learning about the body systems and how they are interconnected. Students have gained insights about hygiene and how to keep their bodies clean.  Sixth graders have also learned about the physical, social, and emotional changes that happen when they go through puberty.  The seventh graders have been learning about drug education which includes addiction and treatment options. Students also worked on a research project to further enhance their knowledge of specific drugs.  The eighth graders have been studying communicable and non-communicable diseases.  Students have been learning about vaccines and how health insurance works.  Students also had a refresher course on SOS (Signs of Suicide) with the help of our amazing social workers.

Art: I can’t believe it’s coming to an end already!  6th grade is painting a split complementary color scheme by mixing values like tints, shades, and intermediates.  7th grade is creating a wood sculpture and writing an art analysis.  8th grade is creating a surreal collage using the app Pixelmator.  Congrats to the 8th graders and good luck at SHS!

Music: We are winding down trimester 3. All grades are working on their keyboard unit. We have focused on melody in 6th Grade and chords in 7th and 8th grade. All grades will be finishing the trimester by composing a short melody for the keyboard. They will, of course, perform their composition for the class in the final call recital.  It’s been a great trimester. Enjoy your summer!

TASOL: Students in 7th and 8th grade have been learning about consumerism and how to make good decisions when purchasing different goods. They have been in the kitchens focusing on new cooking techniques and identifying unknown utensils. We have reviewed kitchen safety and looked at how to keep food safe while cooking and storing. As the trimester comes to an end, students will be sharing their recipes and experiences from different opportunities with cooking at home.  Sixth grade finished their sewing projects. We are completing the trimester by learning about utensils, cooking techniques, and kitchen safety. Have a great summer!

8th Grade Graduation Information
A School Messenger will be sent out on Monday, May 22nd with all the details parents need to know about for Graduation on May 30th.

Summer Reading
This summer, we want students to experience the pure joy of reading. Since the purpose of summer reading is to help foster a love of reading, we strongly feel that students should read a book that is of high interest to them and close to the difficulty level of text they would encounter during the school year.
Incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will be completing a summer reading assignment. This assignment will be shared in current 5th-grade, 6th-grade, and 7th-grade classes. This assignment contains two parts: (1) Read a book! (2) Write a letter to your next year’s language arts teacher.  The assignment is available on the district website

End-of-Year Technology Information
Aside from a few exceptions (defined below) all students will KEEP their District 96 technology (iPad, iPad Case, Charging Cable, Charging Brick, and Logitech Crayon) over the summer and will be expected to return with it at the beginning of the 23-24 school year. It will be the student’s responsibility to come to school next year with all of their technology items. Should parents have technology-related questions over the summer, they can get a hold of us at [email protected]

Exceptions:
-All EC student iPads at Willow Grove will be collected at the end of the school year. We will redeploy class sets at the start of the 23-24 school year.
-All 8th-grade student iPads will be collected on the morning of Wednesday, May 24th at both middle schools.
-Any student who is confirmed not returning to District 96 for the 23-24 school year will need to turn in their technology items on the last day of school.
-Any student who unenrolls from District 96 (during the school year or during the summer) is required to turn in their technology items as soon as possible after they confirm unenrollment, even if families indicate they are planning to return at a later date, District 96 technology items should be collected.

End-of-Year Staff Gifts
We are bringing back  GiftCrowd for end-of-year gifts, a gifting site that allows families to contribute to group gifts.  Use the link and select the teachers and staff you would like to join a gift for.  You only need to fill one cart and check out once.

Teachers and staff will get an email at the end of the last school day advising that they received a group gift. They will only be advised of the total gift amount and who contributed, not the individual contribution amounts. They will then have a large selection of gift cards they can choose from. Neither the staff nor the families pay a fee for the use of this service.
