What’s Happening at TG?
PE: In our last rotation, everyone did a great job with our floor hockey unit and seemed to have a lot of fun! Students have been truly working hard on fitness days, especially with our class vs. class vs. class pacer competitions.  Classes are motivating each other as a team and many students are showing great individual improvements.  Keep up the hard work!  We are currently in the last rotation of trimester two with group C back in PE and Group D in Health until 2/24.  During this PE rotation, we are enjoying our badminton unit, where students have been practicing skills and are applying them in a round-robin doubles tournament.  IN OTHER EXCITING NEWS, we purchased Polar Heart Monitors for each student to wear during PE.  Together, we have been learning how to use them and they have been a great tool for us to teach students about lifelong fitness.  We look forward to continuing to implement these in our classes.

Health: The sixth-grade students are working on first aid during this rotation.  Students are learning about choking, EDITH plans, hypothermia, burns, and much more.  In seventh grade, students are learning about stress, Signs of Suicide, depression, and healthy relationships.  We will be having OMNI Youth Services located here in BG come in to work on healthy ways to deal with stress.  The eighth graders will be learning about nutrition.  Students will be creating a nutrition and fitness plan for a client.

Art: We are going crazy getting our work finished for the trimester!  6th just finished their paper mache figures and clay frogs/lizards.  7th is frantically finishing wood sculptures and clay coil vases.  8th is completing a surreal collage.  Looking forward to an art show of work from the Art Fair Club here at Twin Groves on March 2nd at 6:00 during the Music in our Schools show featuring the choir, orchestra, and band.  Hope to see you there.

Music: We are winding down the trimester. All grades have been working on the guitar unit. 6th Grade focused on melody and reading TAB, 7th Grade started reading TAB and is now shifting to half chords, and 8th Grade is working on full chords and accompaniment. All grades finished composing a short melody and transcribed it from guitar TAB to keyboard staff notation. Next trimester, students will be in TASOL (The Art and Science of Living).

TASOL: All TASOL students have been working in the kitchens. We have made some great recipes including baking powder biscuits, lemonade cookies, french toast, and many more. As the trimester comes to an end, 7th and 8th-grade students will be creating a presentation for their Cooking at Home assignment. Sixth grade finished their sewing projects. They have been learning how to be safe in the kitchen, reading recipes, and identifying utensils. Take some time and cook in the kitchen with your students. They love to try new recipes and it is the perfect way to spend quality time with your students. Trimester 3 will start on February 27. All TASOL students will rotate to Art.

5Essentials Survey for Parents/Guardians
Beginning January 24 through April 2nd, District 96 invites you to share your thoughts on the inner workings of your child’s school.  On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago.

As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school.   Your participation will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide our improvement. Parent identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.

Please visit http://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent/ to begin the parent survey. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact UChicago Impact Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or [email protected].
