Principal's Message - December 9, 2022

12/9/22
Just a reminder…Tuesday, December 13th is an Early Release. Students will be dismissed at 1:30 PM.

What’s Happening at Twin?
PE: As we closed out the month of November, we transitioned into our indoor units and activities.  Students in PE have just completed a basketball unit where we offered students a choice of 3 different leagues:  Pro, College, and Rec.  Each league was geared towards students with different abilities and interest levels in basketball.  We also continued our fitness days on Mondays (Cardio) and Thursdays (Strength), with our class vs. class vs class running competitions. They have been working really hard!

Group A finished up their trimester 2 Health rotation on Wednesday, December 7, and group B began their trimester 2 rotation on Thursday, December 8.  PE students will transition to our Dance unit during rotation B.  We understand that many students look forward to this unit all year, while other students feel a great deal of anxiety during this unit.  The focus is teamwork within their groups, being creative, and having fun. Please encourage your child to bring a good attitude and creative ideas as most students find themselves really enjoying the structure of this unit.  We look forward to seeing what the students come up with for their routines!

Health: The sixth-grade students are working on first aid in this rotation.  Students are learning about choking, EDITH plans, hypothermia, burns, and much more.  In seventh grade, students are learning about stress, Signs of Suicide, depression, and healthy relationships.  We will be having OMNI Youth Services located here in BG come into work on healthy ways to deal with stress.  The eighth graders will be learning about nutrition.  Students will be creating a nutrition plan and a fitness plan for a client.

Music: And so Trimester 2 has started. 6th grade started off by using their rhyming skills in creating a short RAP song. This RAP will introduce us to the many facets of Garageband. 7th has been working on their rhythms in one of the online programs “Breezin’ Thru”. 8th grade has focused on creating an accompaniment for poems they read in Garageband. All grades are in the process of shifting to our keyboard unit where students will continue on their journey learning to play songs at their our skill level.

TASOL: This month in TASOL, 7th and 8th-grade students have been keeping a food journal and examining their choices compared to the MyPlate recommendations. They are also investigating different nutrition labels and how to identify healthier options.  We will start working in the kitchens next week after reviewing kitchen safety, utensils/appliance uses, and cooking terms. In 6th grade, we have been exploring different career clusters. They are creating individual resumes including their interests and achievements.  Students will engage in a short money management unit before starting their sewing projects later this month.

Teacher Gifts-PTO
To make gift-giving easier this winter we are introducing GiftCrowd, a gifting site that allows families to contribute to group gifts.  Use the link and select the teachers and staff you would like to join a gift for.  You only need to fill out one cart and check out once.

Teachers and staff will get an email at the end of the school day on December 22 advising that they received a group gift. They will only be advised of the total gift amount and who contributed, but not the individual contribution amounts. They will then have a large selection of gift cards they can choose from. Neither the staff nor the families pay a fee for use of this service.

Current Patriot Consortium Mathematics Placement Process

The consortium has created criteria that defines the four strands of mathematical proficiency to highlight the attributes of a proficient mathematical thinker. The criteria are grouped into three categories.

-Procedural Skills & Fluency (How well you can correctly use mathematics.)
-Conceptual Understanding (How well you utilize mathematical ideas, transfer your knowledge into new situations, and apply it to new contexts.)
-Problem-Solving with Adaptive Reasoning and Strategic Competence (How well you can apply strategies and sound reasoning.)

Over the course of the year, the mathematics teachers will be discussing these criteria with the students in class to create a portrait of each student. This portrait will be used to recommend the students into the mathematics course at Stevenson High School that matches their content knowledge as well as level of mathematics proficiency at this time.

As a district and consortium, it is our vision that each student moves on to the next course in the sequence providing that there are no significant gaps in content knowledge. If there are significant gaps in content knowledge and a change in recommendation occurs, we will contact you. We feel that this process allows a mathematical picture of the student to develop over time, which will provide a more informed recommendation.

Course Sequence for Bridge Algebra 1 Students

-Algebra 1 with Mentor math or Algebra 1 with Math Guided Study will be recommended if students need to reinforce and refresh targets in Units 1-4
-Algebra 1 will be recommended if students have mastered targets in Units 1-4

Course Sequence for Algebra 1 Students

-Geometry will be recommended if students need to reinforce and refresh targets in Units 1-4
-Geometry Accelerated will be recommended if students have mastered targets in Units 1-4

Course Sequence for Geometry Students

-Algebra 2 will be recommended if students need to reinforce and refresh targets in Units 1-3
-Algebra 2 Accelerated will be recommended if students have mastered targets in Units 1-3
