The weather is starting to turn and somehow the school year is already in full swing! While Fall is a favorite season for a lot of us, it can be a stressful time of year for students and parents alike. With shorter days and colder weather ahead, Fall can also be a great time to focus on and learn about different ways to engage in self-care. Self-care refers to taking care of personal needs, both physical and psychological, so that we can best manage stress in our lives. Practicing self-care can improve resilience and help us get through difficult times. Please see below for some examples of how you and your student can engage in self-care:

1. Establish good sleep habits. Try to keep a regular sleep schedule to get your body into a rhythm, and try to avoid screens right before going to bed.
2. Get moving. Physical activity benefits us both mentally and physically and sets us up well to handle stress that might come our way.
3. Get creative. Creating art, music, or pieces of writing are great ways to stay grounded from the comfort of home.
4. Spend time with loved ones. No explanation necessary here! Loved ones can provide a sense of comfort and happiness.
5. Practice good online citizenship. With how much time we spend in digital spaces, keeping social media experiences positive can have a major impact on attitude.
6. Keep a schedule and a routine. Don’t stress about trying to remember everything- by writing things into a schedule or including them in a routine, we can let go of the fear of forgetting something important.
7. Eat right and maintain good hygiene. It’s much easier to take on challenging situations when these physical needs are met.
8. Face stressful items head on. Sometimes the best way to care for yourself is to cross things off the checklist.
9. Spend time in nature. Being outside is good for the mind and body (weather permitting…) and has tons of health benefits.
10. Create a self-care tool kit. Come up with a plan, or a list of your own ideas so that on those hard days you know exactly what to do.

All in all, self-care looks a little bit different for everybody. Spend some time alone or with your student thinking about something you can do to better care for yourself!
