The beginning of the school year is a great time to establish effective homework and study habits for students. These suggestions are designed to serve as a starting point. Know that each child has different needs and habits, so adaptations of the following strategies may be necessary for your student to be successful.

Homework Tips:
-Set up a specific place for homework. Be sure that all materials and supplies that may be needed are available. The area should be free of distractions and noises (e.g., TV, video games, phones).
-Set up a designated “homework time.” Homework should be completed earlier in the evening. Be sure your student is alert and that they are not working on an empty stomach.
-Build in short breaks (e.g., restroom, getting a snack or drink, walking around house). Breaks allow the brain to refocus before beginning new tasks. If your child is feeling overwhelmed while working on a task, it may be time for a break.
-Prioritize assignments each night. Tasks that will require more time or effort should be started first. Students need to manage their time when doing their homework; help your students set goals about the amount of time to spend on each assignment.
-Be sure your student reads rubrics and directions carefully and understands the expectations of any given assignment.
-Help your students pace themselves with long-term projects/research papers; they should work on long-term assignments each night, breaking the projects into smaller, more manageable tasks.
-If students are not highly motivated to complete homework, build in simple rewards for the completion of each task.
-Be sure to praise your child for their efforts as much as their successes.

Study Tips:

-Spread out studying rather than cramming at the last minute. Some skills, such as memorizing content-specific vocabulary, need routine daily review. Help your child estimate how much time studying for a particular quiz or test will take.
-Have students make a list of the things they need to know for a test. If a study guide is not provided, have your student create one while they are studying.
-Students should make sure all their notes are in order and that important information is highlighted.
-Students should study more challenging or complex topics when they feel most prepared and awake.
-Students may want to study with a partner if possible. To review information, they can take turns quizzing each other on the material.
-Help students relate new information to their daily lives. Support them in creating mnemonics, flow charts/graphic organizers or flash cards. Flash cards can be a nice way to study vocabulary on the go.

If your child needs more assistance with homework or preparing for tests/quizzes, please remind them that they can stay for study halls, or make an appointment with their teacher for additional content review.

Conference Information
Fall Family/Educator Conferences are right around the corner.
The conference dates are Thursday, October 6th from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM and Friday, October 7th from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM

We will be using Meet the Teacher as an electronic sign up for conferences. A School Messenger email was sent to families on Monday, September 19th at 6:00PM with a link to sign up for conferences.

Conferences will be held virtually using Meet the Teacher’s video conferencing platform unless parents request an in-person conference using the instructions below. After you have scheduled your conferences, you will receive an email from Meet the Teacher with a link you will use to access the video conferences.

6th Grade parents will sign up for one, 10 minute time slot with their child’s 2nd period teacher.

7th Grade parents will sign up for one, 10 minute time slot with their child’s 2nd period teacher.

8th Grade parents will sign up for one, 10 minute time slot with their child’s 4th period teacher.

If parents would like, they will also be able to sign up for a conference with their child’s PE, Health, Exploratory, Spanish teachers, and any related service provider their children see. Access will be limited for Exploratory and Spanish teachers. Exploratory teachers will only be available for students currently in the classes. Spanish teachers will only be available for students in the A Day rotation.

If you are unable to schedule a conference with a specific teacher, please remember that conferences are not the only time to communicate with teachers. Please feel free to reach out any time.

REQUESTING AN IN-PERSON CONFERENCE

If you want to have an in-person conference with the teachers, you must notify the teachers via email by the end of the day on Tuesday, October 4th.

Dress Code
This is a friendly reminder of the District 96 Standards of Dress from the Parent/Student Handbook.
4.12-e Standards for Student Dress. Students who are appropriately and comfortably dressed are able to focus on schoolwork more effectively. The following guidelines will be enforced by building administrators. Cooperation by parents is appreciated.
1. Dress or appearance that provokes or distracts other students or otherwise causes a disruption to the educational process is prohibited.
2. Shoes must be worn at all times.
3. Clothing, jewelry, or accessories may not have writing or pictures that advertise or advocate alcohol, drugs, tobacco, obscenity, violence, or gang activity.
4. Pants must be worn at the waistline.
5. Hats are allowed on designated hat days only.
6. Half shirts, cropped tops, spaghetti straps, and underwear or sleepwear worn as outerwear are not acceptable.
7. Undergarments should not be visible.
8. With the exception of appropriate jewelry, no chains should be worn.

Please note…any student violating the dress code will be asked to change into other clothes or cover up.

Cell Phones
Cell phones should be securely locked in the students’ lockers from 7:43 AM-2:30 PM.
We are asking that all students have their cell phones silenced and locked in their lockers from 7:43 AM to 2:30 PM.
If a staff member sees a cell phone out, we will ask the student to lock it in their locker. If they do not comply, the phone will be taken and sent to the office until the end of the day. Students can collect their cell phones from the office at 2:30 PM.
