Principal's Message February 18, 2021

2/19/21
TGIF…Twin Groves it’s Friday!

Just a reminder...there is an asynchronous day on Wednesday, February 23rd. Dismissal will be at 12:00 PM.  HERE is the schedule.

Monthly Asynchronous Wednesdays

Once per month, beginning in December, students will participate in asynchronous activities for a portion of their school day.  The dates for each of these asynchronous Wednesdays are identified below.  Students will go through all of their periods on an amended schedule. They will be done with their classes at 12:00PM. The asynchronous portion of the day will be from 12:30-2:30 PM. Teachers will communicate with students to be sure that they understand the expectations for each of these days.  While we prefer that the asynchronous work is completed during this designated time, please adjust timing based on what works best for your family.

These monthly asynchronous days were created to give students the opportunity to participate in topics that will enhance our current curricular content, and so that teachers have time to collaborate and plan with each other to determine the best way to approach future instruction.

The asynchronous portion of the day will take place in the afternoon. The asynchronous focus for this day is digital citizenship.  Students will be engaging in a variety of Digital Citizenship activities See specifics below.

What’s Happening at Twin Groves?
PE: As we are a few weeks into our hybrid schedule things are rolling along very well.  It is great to see students in the building. The students are currently working on their dance unit routine.  The students have three options to choose from.  Dance routine, fitness routine, sport skills routine.  The criteria is length and is performed in sync with the music they choose.  The three options give all students the opportunity to perform a routine they are comfortable with.  The unit will conclude on 2/24.  This unit is done by both the in-person as well as the remote students.  Any questions please reach out to us.

Health: This rotation the 6th graders have begun working on digging in on decision making and making good choices.  We have spent a considerable amount of time discussing this and then working on what sexual harassment is and how to stop it.  Seventh grade has been busy learning about stress and how to reduce it in their lives.  They have had guest speakers from Omni Youth Services located here in Buffalo Grove to help them with coping skills and communication skills.  The eighth graders have been busy studying about human sexuality.  Just like the sixth graders, the eighth grade is reviewing sexual harassment and creating a court case out of this.

Art: We are starting our final project!  6th and 7th grade will be exploring the element of art: value.  We will be using our 12 piece sketching pencil set to take flat 2D shapes and shade them into forms that look 3D.  8th grade will be using an app called Pixelmator that is similar to Photoshop.  We will be exploring our current cultural identities and will then create a digital collage that represents who they are today.

Music: As our trimester begins to wind down,  students have been working on our performing target and composition target using a couple of different music software programs. (Breezin’ Thru, Noteflight and Garageband). We will finish up with composition and notation next week and then start creating in Garageband. 8th Grade will create an accompaniment to a poem they will read, 7th Grade will create improvisation for the 12 Bar Blues, and 6th Grade will create different melodies for characters in a story book.

The Art of Science and Living: Students in 7th and 8th grade have been learning about consumerism and how to make good decisions when purchasing different goods. The cooking unit looks different this year due to e-learning. The class is focused on learning new cooking techniques and identifying unknown utensils. We have reviewed kitchen safety and looked at how to keep food safe while cooking and storing. As the trimester comes to an end, students will be sharing their recipes and experiences from different opportunities to cook at home. Sixth grade is finishing their sewing projects. Next, we will complete the trimester by learning about utensils, cooking techniques and kitchen safety. Trimester 3 will start on March 2. All TASOL students will rotate to Art.
