TGIF… Twin Groves it’s Friday!

What’s Happening at TG?
PE
This rotation we will be doing an elective unit. This allows students to choose a unit they are most interested in. The students will choose between three units: volleyball, badminton or basketball. Students will be in the unit they choose the entire rotation. We will continue with our fitness days throughout the rotation. The fitness days will focus on strength and endurance, such as, circuit, bosu workout, and cross training. Fitness testing will take place in the third trimester.

Health
This rotation in health the students in 8th grade have begun learning about nutrition. We are focusing on how the foods they eat impact their overall health. Seventh graders are working on stress and understanding what stress does to the human body. We will also be looking at depression and suicide. In sixth grade, students are working on learning about first aid skills they will need later in life. They are learning how to save a victim that is choking, treatment for burns, and weather related emergencies.

Art
We are just starting our last projects at each grade level.  6th grade is going to learn to mix values (tints and shades) as well as intermediate colors.  Their final project will be based on a split complementary color theme. 7th grade is beginning to build a figure out of wood.  They will learn about the history of abstract assemblage.  8th grade is going to use the app Pixelmator to create their final project.  Their goal is to make a multi layered collage about their multiple cultures and identities.

Music
We are on our last weeks of the music rotation. Students in all grades have started the guitar unit. 6th grade begins with the basics and learning notes on the strings and readings tabulature. 7th grade continues reading tabulature and is introduced to half and full chords. 8th grade works on combining melodies with chord accompaniments. All grades will do a composition using the guitar and their noteflight notation program on the the ipad.

As we come to the final month of Trimester 2, all students are starting to cook. Sixth grade students are learning basic cooking terminology and utensil idenification. They will be working with their groups to learn basic safety skills in the kitchens and participate in several cooking labs. Seventh and Eighth grade students are finishing their sewing projects and are starting to prepare for the cooking unit. They will be reviewing skills and learning new cooking techniques over the next few weeks. Trimester 2 ends on 2/28 and all TASOL students will move to Art for the final trimester.

Regarding the Coronavirus: Info and Guidance for Schools

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has issued this information and guidance–including Frequently Asked Questions regarding the coronavirus–for families whose students attend Illinois Kdg–Grade 12 schools.

The info includes this related link to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, which is frequently updated.

The IDPH continues to advise that the best way to prevent infection by this virus is similar to the precautions recommended to avoid the seasonal flu, including frequent hand washing.

Band Festival- Photos
Our 7th and 8th grade band students participated in a districtwide after-school Band Festival held at Twin Groves on January 31st. Students worked with Howard Green, director of the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band, and also received instruction in instrumental sectionals led by six guest clinicians. SEE PHOTOS of the Band Festival, organized by KCSD96 Band Directors Chad Craw (Woodlawn) and Dan Nagle (Twin Groves).

KCSD96 Offers a Dual Language Opportunity
Parents are invited to consider the Dual Language Program for their incoming Willow Grove kindergartner. The program’s purpose is to give children the opportunity to develop a deep academic proficiency in two languages. Fifty percent of the academic day instruction is delivered in Spanish and fifty percent in English. Following their kindergarten year at Willow Grove, Dual Language participants continue at Country Meadows for Grades 2–5 and transition to Woodlawn for Grades 6–8.

To be included in the public lottery that will be used to select the 2020–21 Dual Language kindergarten class, an Interest Form (ENGLISH or SPANISH) is due to the Willow Grove Early Learning Center office by 3:00 p.m. on March 18th.

LEARN MORE about the KCSD96 Dual Language program and attend a Parent Education Evening on February 12th or March 16th at 6:30 p.m. at Willow Grove Early Learning Center to hear a presentation from District faculty/administrators and ask questions.
