What’s Happening in the classrooms at TG?

PE
In the month of November the students will be involved in a basketball unit.  The students will have a choice to play in two different levels based on their skill and experience.  They choose the level they are most comfortable with.  Scooter basketball will also be a choice.  We will be continuing with fitness days, but the focus will be on muscular strength and muscular endurance.
The fitness activities will include circuit training, cross training, fitness track, plyo boxes,Bosu ball workouts and fitness dice.

Health
This rotation in health, the students in 8th grade have begun learning about human sexuality.  The key focus for this rotation is abstinence, but we have discussed other forms of contraception as well.  The students also created a court case about sexual harassment.  In 7th grade we are learning about the health triangle and what makes up health.  Students are diving into self-esteem and what it means to stay positive.  Finally in 6th grade, students are working on decision making skills along with being an up-stander when confronting a bully.

Art
We have started our 3rd and final projects.
6th grade is starting to learn about the color wheel and will create a painting using a split complementary color theme.  Mixing and pouring paint is a highlight for the students!
7th grade is creating an abstract assemblage.  Using their imaginations they are creating and painting a figure out of wood.  I compare it to finding images in the clouds!
8th grade is creating a cultural identity collage using the Pixelmator app on their iPads.  They are learning how to cut out images and layer them to create a composition that incorporates a variety of sizes, overlapping and “planted” images.

Music
As we get ready to wind down the trimester, all grades are working on the keyboard. 6th grade is focusing on melody, 7th grade is focused on 12 Bar Blues, and 8th grade is focused on melody and harmony (chords) accompaniment. All grade will also create their own composition for their level. This unit is a great unit for advanced students to help other students as they are all at different skill levels. Great cooperative learning going on. Advance student will also have an opportunity to perform for us some of their pieces from their private lessons. We have such talented students here at TG.

TASOL
We have been cooking in TASOL! Students in 7th and 8th grade have been very busy in the kitchens. We have made some great recipes including parmesan twists, fried rice, and fluffy pancakes. Students are starting their sewing unit this week. They have all learned how to sew on a button and will continue with their individual sewing project. Sixth grade have finished their sewing projects. They explored the MyPlate recommended guidelines. They will start working in the kitchens  next week making smoothies, french toast, pizza and cookies. Take some time this fall and cook in the kitchen with your students. They love to try new recipes, and it is the perfect way to spend quality time with your students. Trimester 2 will start on November 18th. All TASOL students will rotate to Art.
