What’s Happening at TG?

Health
This rotation in health, students in 8th grade have begun learning about human sexuality.  The key focus for this rotation is abstinence, but we have discussed other forms of contraception as well.  The students also created a court case about sexual harassment.  In 7th grade we are learning about the health triangle and what makes up health.  Students are diving into self-esteem and what it means to stay positive.  Finally in 6th grade, students are working on decision making skills along with being an up-stander when confronting a bully.

PE
During the month of October, the students will continue fitness days twice a week.  The focus on these days will still be cardiovascular endurance.  For the activity days there will be another round of elective choices. This allows the students to participate in something they have a desire in or just feel comfortable participating in.  Also as the weather gets a little cooler the students must be prepared to go outside.  They should leave sweat clothes in the PE locker.

Art
We have just completed the first projects at all grade levels.  I am in the process of going through the work and looking for evidence of mastery of our new targets!  Our big focus is now about creating art with a purpose and for a purpose.  I am no longer just looking at the art work, but also written statements and practice papers.
6th Graders are now working on paper mache figures.  They have chosen a specific person to represent. They started with a wire form, stuffed it with paper and are now covering it with paper pulp.  Paint is soon to come!
7th Graders have been introduced to two traditional Asian techniques - Sumi-e and batik.  They have chosen their “spirit” animal.  We are at the wax stage of the process.

8th Graders are working on a quote painting.  We looked at typography and how choices in fonts and formatting speak louder than the actual words.  Acrylic and tempera paint are being explored at this stage in the project.

Music
Music-We are off and running playing the guitar! We all started with learning or reviewing tablature. Each grade level worked on different material, though we always review what we learned last year for 7th and 8th grade. Today, we talked about composers, and different strategies for writing our own song on the guitar using TAB. 7th and 8th graders moved on from TAB to chords. Their targets relate more to harmony and melody. So, they will be accompanying themselves in different performances. Your students are doing a great job working on their musicianship on this instrument. Soon we will be off to the keyboard for the remainder of the trimester.

TASOL
This month in TASOL, the 7th and 8th grade students completed a laundry unit. They have started working on multiple recipes in the kitchens. They are learning new cooking techniques and familiarizing themselves with different utensils and cooking tools.  The students picked a sewing project and will start sewing towards the end of the month. Sixth grade completed their own resumes in the career unit. They are currently working on their sewing projects which consists of a pillow with detail using three different stitches. Later this month, the 6th grade students will start working in the kitchens with introductory repcies.

A WORD ABOUT IAR ASSESSMENT RESULTS
Today your student is bringing home his or her Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) data from the IAR assessment administered in April 2019. Please check your student’s backpack for these assessment results.
IAR  is the assessment and accountability measure used for students enrolled in Illinois public schools.

Students in Grades 3–8 take this assessment in the academic areas of English language arts and mathematics.

IAR results show whether your student met grade-level expectations and is on track for the next grade level. Please note that IAR  is only one measure of how your student is performing academically.

For more information and support in understanding your student’s IAR  assessment results, please refer to the following:
