TGIF...Twin Groves it’s Friday!

What’s Happening at TG?

PE

We are continueing with our cardio days twice a week. Due to the inconsistant weather we have been offering many choice days which allow the students to participate in activities they enjoy. On May 24th we will be having the TG fun run. This is about 2.5 miles then after the run the students can participate in many different activities. This is also a half day. We would like wish the 8th graders good luck at SHS. With the 6th and 7th grade we will finish up with some softball, football, basketball and soccer.

Health

The final rotation for the 6th graders was about the human body systems and human growth and development. We discussed the physical, social, and emotional changes that are starting to happen or that might happen in the next few weeks. Students were able to create Kahoot games and crossword puzzles in order to understand concepts. In 7th grade the students learned about drugs in the BG area. These drugs include: heroin, alcohol, marijuana, prescription pills, and e-cigarettes. A culminating activity of a drug research project and a March Madness type of game was played in order to show mastery of learning skills. In 8th grade students were studying about diseases. We covered the cold, flu, vaccines, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. We learned about health insurance and why it is such a controversial issue here in the US. Students played a game on the iPad called Plague Inc. The purpose of this game is to create a disease, have a point of origin, and mutate the disease before the CDC can create a cure. The overall purpose is to eliminate all humans off of earth. Students needed to understand how diseases start, understand mutation patterns, and transmission patterns in order for them to succeed.

Twin Groves FUN RUN!

We are excited for the Fun Run/Walk this year that will take place on Friday, May 24th during our half day.  Please note the following information in order to make this a fun and successful day for the kids.

-Preparation:  Students should make sure to eat a good dinner the night before, get a good night's sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and drink plenty of water.

-Cell phones:  Student should not be using cell phones during the school day.

-Safety:  If there is a student who is unable to walk back to school during the Fun Run, there will be safety/first aid wagons stationed along the route.  If necessary, students will be brought back to school via the wagons and tended to by our school nurse.

-Resource Officer: Our school resource officer, Ashley Krozel, will be present on the Fun Run route as well as back at school.

-Rain Plans: If the weather does not cooperate, we will have a modified schedule offering the students choices of activities throughout the day, very similar to what the day would look like if it's nice out.

Learning is one of the greatest gifts humans have. Many people become discouraged when they don’t know something. This workshop with returning popular guest speaker Dr. Michael Maniacci for parents of children Grades KDG–8 encourages optimism. The focus is on encouraging your child to love learning and to understand that learning is not the same as knowing.

Dr. Maniacci is a licensed clinical psychologist, instructor, and published author whose works have been translated into numerous languages.

All interested adults are welcome. Contact the District 96 Parent Community Liaison Lubna Andrabi with questions, 847.459.4260, ext. 8136, [email protected]

Summer Reading

As summer approaches, we thought we’d take a few moments to discuss the importance of maintaining solid reading habits over the summer. Much of the research around summer reading suggests that students can lose more than two months of academic progress if they do not continue to read during summer months. Taking trips with your student to the library, listening to audiobooks in the car, and discussing the books you are reading together are some of the ways you can continue to help your student develop lifelong reading habits.

This year, the summer reading theme is Read Harder 2019.  We encourage all incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to set reading goals beyond what they typically read and increase their reading volume this summer.  We’ve included a list of books for students to choose from and it is expected that each student will read at least one book from the required list. After that, students may elect to read from the required list or any book of their choosing. In addition to keeping track of the books they’ve read, students will be asked to write a letter to their new Language Arts teacher about their own reading experiences over the summer.  Summer reading lists, parent permission slips for the book selected, reading log, and assignment requirements can be found below.

We encourage all families to read along with their students and make reading an enjoyable experience.
