TGIF...Twin Groves it’s Friday!

What’s Happening at TG?

PE
As the weather warms up next month we hope to be getting outside.  The students will be getting back to their cardio days twice a week.  They will work on improving their cardiovascular level.  The students just finished the floor hockey unit.  The week before spring break will be a choice week, this is where each day the students will choose which activity the want to participate in.  After spring break we will be in an elective unit, these units will depend on the weather and if we can get outside or not.

Health
The final rotation for the 6th graders was about the human body systems and human growth and development. We discussed the physical, social, and emotional changes that are starting to happen or that might happen in the next few weeks. Students were able to create Kahoot games and crossword puzzles in order to understand concepts. In 7th grade the students learned about drugs in the BG area. These drugs include: heroin, alcohol, marijuana, prescription pills, and e-cigarettes. A culminating activity of a drug research project and a March Madness type of game was played in order to show mastery of learning skills. In 8th grade students were studying about diseases. We covered the cold, flu, vaccines, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. We learned about health insurance and why it is such a controversial issue here in the US. Students played a game on the iPad called Plague Inc. The purpose of this game is to create a disease, have a point of origin, and mutate the disease before the CDC can create a cure. The overall purpose is to eliminate all humans off of earth. Students needed to understand how diseases start, understand mutation patterns, and transmission patterns in order for them to succeed.

Art
Our 6th graders are learning about the proportions of the human body. We are going to draw people in motion and/or in a crowd.  We will color these with chalk pencils.  7th grade is learning how to draw with accuracy using a variety of drawing techniques.  Each student is picking their own favorite cartoon as their subject matter.  We will then put the drawings into Art Studio (iPad app) and color it in the style of Andy Warhol's Pop Art.   8th grade is creating self-portraits.  They are starting with the specific features of the face and then we are going to learn how to place them on the face.  Shading will be explored.

Music
We have started our final trimester! Amazing how quickly the year has gone by! In Music we began the trimester with some singing (a perfect way to start!)  6th grade class will start with a Garageband Project creating a short RAP and then creating the accompaniment to support their RAP. 7th Grade is working on a "Concept" song, where the students need to "teach" me something they have learned in their core classes. 8th grade, is doing their songwriting project with the theme of "anti-bullying". You're children are so creative!

As we continue in the trimester, we will start our guitar unit in all grades, where we will either be introduced to the instrument, or we will continue our work from last year. Then, eventually, we will shift to the keyboard unit. Each grade level will have composition writing/performing on both instruments.

TASOL
This month in TASOL we are working on the nutrition unit for 7th and 8th grade. Students have been keeping a food journal and examining their choices compared to the MyPlate recommendations. They are also investigating the old and new nutrition label. We will start cooking after Spring Break. In 6th grade, we have been looking at the family functions and created a family crest to represent those functions within each individual's family. Students are currently exploring different career clusters and will begin creating an resume next week.
