TGIF...Twin Groves it’s Friday!

Twin Groves

What’s happening at TG?

Art

This has been a very productive trimester so far.  I'm running out of room on my walls and in the display cases. 6th grade finished paper mache figures and moved onto clay elephants and are now using paint to mix up values of tints, shades and intermediate colors. 7th grade just completed a batik & sumi-e project on fabric that came out beautiful.  Their clay tiki gods got a nice coat of shoe polish and are looking like genuine wood! 8th grade just finished up painting a quote on canvas with a focus on typography, fonts, word placement, spacing, and emphasis. We are in the process of glazing our clay initials and will individual decide how and on what to mount them.

Spanish

In 6th grade Spanish, students will start to learn about the family.  In 7th grade Spanish, we will be learning about party vocabulary. In 8th grade Spanish, we will be reviewing family vocabulary and incorporating possessive adjectives.

Orchestra

Congratulations to the 10 TG Orchestra students who performed at ILMEA on Saturday, November 3rd at Schaumburg HS! 6-8 Grade Orchestra students are getting ready for their upcoming Fall concert on Wednesday, November 14th. This concert will feature 6th Grade, 7th/8th Grade and Chamber Orchestras as well as the Twin Groves Chorus. It is going to be a fantastic concert!

Band

Congratulations to the Honor band for an outstanding Veteran's Day performance, and to the jazz band for their performance in the Beginning Band Concert. Way to go! We had three students make ILMEA and they performed well at the concert on November 2nd. We are accepting solo and ensemble entries right now for the contest on February 2nd. All students have received solos and ensembles. We certainly hope students will participate in this very educational event that will help them increase their level of performance. The deadline for entry is Friday, November 16th. We are currently working on music we will be playing for our concert on Thursday, December 13th.

Current Patriot Consortium Mathematics Placement Process

Over the last few years, Stevenson High School and the feeder middle schools have created a scope and sequence and aligned the curriculum to the Common Core Standards for Mathematics, as well as created common benchmarks for the end of each unit for both the Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 courses. The consortium has created criteria that defines the four strands of mathematical proficiency to highlight the attributes of a proficient mathematical thinker. The criteria are grouped into three categories (See chart on second page):

  • Procedural Skills & Fluency (How well you can correctly use mathematics.)

  • Conceptual Understanding (How well you utilize mathematical ideas, transfer your knowledge into new situations, and apply it to new contexts.)

  • Problem Solving with Adaptive Reasoning and Strategic Competence (How well you can apply strategies and sound reasoning.)

Over the course of the year, the mathematics teachers will be discussing these criteria with the students in class to create a portrait of each student. This portrait will be used to recommend the students into the mathematics course at Stevenson High School that matches their content knowledge as well as level of mathematics proficiency at this time.

As a district and consortium, it is our vision that each student move on to the next course in the sequence providing that there are not significant gaps in content knowledge. If there are significant gaps in content knowledge and a change in recommendation occurs, we will contact you. We feel that this process allows a mathematical picture of the student to develop over time, which will provide a more informed recommendation.
