Parents need to help children and adolescents develop a sense of responsibility as their children increase their independence in school and social relationships. Here are some key areas to focus on across the various facets of your child’s life:

Personal responsibility:
Hold your student accountable for personal hygiene, bedtimes, and appropriate dress. Reinforce students’ willingness to accept responsibility or ownership for their actions- if they are unwilling to accept this responsibility, you may need to check the facts and confront your student with what you know. Students’ perceptions of reality may be very different from their parents’ perceptions, so it is important to discuss these differences.

Academic responsibility:
Hold your student accountable for organization of materials, time management, prioritizing of assignments/projects/studying, and turning in their completed homework. As much as you may need to support them in this accountability- remember that the student is ultimately responsible for their work and learning.

Familial responsibility:
Hold your student accountable for chores around the house, even if it is a little thing like cleaning up after themselves after dinner, setting the table, unloading the dishwasher, taking care of a pet, etc. This accountability will increase respect for and investment in their family and appreciation for their home environment. It will also give them a sense of accomplishment.

Social/peer responsibility:
Hold your student accountable for respecting all students in their words and their actions. Encourage your child to communicate respectfully or seek out the assistance of an adult when in conflict with a peer. Encourage tolerance of others- remind them that they will not like everyone, and that not everyone will like them, but that they need to be respectful of everyone. Closely monitor technology usage to reinforce positive interactions and to watch for instances of cyberbullying or other inappropriate uses.

Conferences

We are excited to announce our first round of Family/Educator Conferences. The purpose of Family/Educator Conferences is to allow for cooperative conversations to best support development of the whole child, fostering students' social-emotional and academic growth based upon current needs.

Fall Family/Educator Conferences will be November 19th and 20th.  The conference dates and times are November 19th from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm and November 20th from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Family members may sign up to see as many or as few of your student's current teachers during these conference times. One of your child’s core teachers is also their Flex Teacher.  If you would like to discuss Flex Learning Responsibilities, this could occur during the 10 minute conference with that core teacher.

Each teacher slot will be 10 minutes in length.  Family members may not sign up for more than one slot per teacher.

When a teacher's schedule is full, they will not be accepting any additional conferences.

The teachers are listed in alphabetical order in each tab. The tabs will be the following:

Please enter the building through the South Entrance. There will be signs with the location of the teachers as you walk in.

YOU MUST STOP!

The Buffalo Grove Police Department reports an increase in motorists passing stopped school buses that are loading and unloading students. Because students’ safety is our priority, officers will be monitoring areas where serious violations such as this are prevalent.

Please review the law:

Drivers must stop before meeting or overtaking a school bus loading or unloading passengers on a TWO-lane roadway (even if there is a raised median dividing the roadway).

Drivers must remain stopped until the Stop arm on the school bus is no longer extended and the flashing lights are turned off (or the bus driver signals the driver to pass).

A driver failing to do so may be charged with the violation and receive a mandatory court appearance. Passing a stopped school bus has a fine of $500–$1200. The driving privileges of a person convicted of passing a stopped school bus will be suspended for 3 months for the first offense and one year for the second offense.

When is it permissible for a driver to pass a stopped school bus?

It is permissible when the driver is on a highway with FOUR or more lanes (at least two lanes in either direction) and is traveling in the opposite direction of the bus.

Students will need to go home after school and have a parent or guardian drive them and pick them up from the location in Libertyville.  Parents are more than welcome to join as transportation will NOT be provided. Please take a moment to fill out this survey if you would be interested in joining us!

Information from Catalyst at SHS

Did you know that drinking before age 17 increases your chance of struggling with addiction later in life?

The importance of keeping the teen brain alcohol and drug free is clear when it comes to addiction later in life. When a teen drinks alcohol, pathways are set in the brain that make repetition of that pattern of behavior more likely. Thus, the likeliness of addiction later in life dramatically increases for teen drinkers/users. The data shows that teens who start drinking before age 17 will have nearly 4 times the chance of struggling with addiction later in life than a person who starts drinking at age 21. (Grant, BF and Dawson, DA. Journal of Substance Abuse 9:103-110, 1997). For more information, check out the informational supplement on the Lake County Underage Drinking and Drug Prevention Task Force website.
