Principal's Message 10/5/18

10/5/18

TGIF...Twin Groves it’s Friday!

What’s happening at TG?

PE

During the month of October the students will be participating in football, team handball, and soccer. We will continue working on our cardiovascular endurance. The fitness days will be twice a week, and the activities will be three times a week.  As it gets colder the pacer will be the activity on fitness days. We will also be moving towards muscular strength and endurance as we get inside.

Health

This rotation the 6th graders have been learning about decision making skills. Students have learned about how their decisions have consequences, and how to make good decisions. During this unit students have also learned about bullying, sexual harassment, and sexual abuse. Near the end of the rotation the students created a bully free comic to show their understanding of the material. The seventh graders this year started to learn about mental/emotional health. We have focused on goal setting and the ability to overcome obstacles in order to achieve our goals. The students really enjoyed the Marshmallow Tower activity that worked on team building. In eighth grade we have worked on the human sexuality unit. Students created contraceptive commercials to showcase their knowledge about the material. We discussed abstinence and how choosing to be abstinent has many positive outcomes without any negative consequences. During this unit, students discussed abortion, the Safe Haven Law, homosexuality, and had a great court case on sexual harassment.

Art

6th Grade is working on paper mache figures.  They began with wire forms, stuffed them with paper, and then covered them with paper mache pulp.  The figures are posed and painted. Details and props are added. The kids are having fun creating their favorite figures.

7th Grade is building tiki gods from clay.  They are learning both coil and slab techniques.  Details are added to represent a specific tiki god.  Texture and decoration are also a big focus. These are then fired and painted.  They love working with clay.

8th Grade is learning about typography and fonts.  “What does the font say?” We have explored the tone associated with different fonts.  We’ve also explored how words are aligned and formatted on a page to create emphasis and readability.  The students will use this knowledge to design their favorite quote in an acrylic painting on canvas. This project is always a favorite.

Music

Currently all grades are working on improving their skills on the guitar. 6th grade is focusing on TAB and melody. 7th/8th grade are working on half and full chords. As we continue to be more comfortable with the instrument we will have a short unit on composition, using the guitar, and a "recital" day when student will share their compositions. Later in the month we will switch to the keyboard unit.

TASOL

This month in TASOL has been busy. The 7th and 8th grade students are working on multiple recipes in the kitchens. They are learning new cooking techniques and familiarizing themselves with different utensils and cooking tools. Students will be continuing to work in the kitchens for the remainder of the trimester. They will also complete a mini unit on consumerism. They will look at how to make purchases using informative decision making procedures. Sixth grade completed their own resumes in the career unit. They have started on their sewing projects which consists of a pillow with detail using three different stitches. Later this month, the 6th grade students will start working in the kitchens with introductory repcies.

A WORD ABOUT PARCC ASSESSMENT RESULTS:

Today your student is bringing home his or her PARCC data for the PARCC assessment administered in April 2018. Please check your student’s backpack for these assessment results.

The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) is the assessment and accountability measure used for students enrolled in Illinois public schools. Students in Grades 3–8 take this assessment in the academic areas of English language arts and mathematics.

PARCC results show whether your student met grade-level expectations and is on track for the next grade level. Please note that PARCC is only one measure of how your student is performing academically.

The Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) results for current sixth grade students will also be included. The ISA is administered to students enrolled in grade 5 and grade 8 at their respective grade level.

The ISA measures the Illinois Learning Standards in Science, incorporating the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) that replaced the previous science standards adopted in 1997. The NGSS are the most comprehensive science standards that Illinois has ever had. They are more rigorous and detailed as they integrate the content of science with the practices of science.

For more information and support in understanding your student’s PARCC assessment results, please refer to the following:
