TGIF…Twin Groves it’s Friday!  The students had a great time today during the Fun Run! So happy the weather was in our favor!

In an effort to spread positivity, Twin Groves uses our 5 Traits to recognize exemplars of the following qualities: Responsible, Accountable, Respectful, Safe, and a Community. In addition to the 5 Traits, we are also recognizing students for being an Upstander.

What’s happening at TG?

HEALTH

In Health the 6th graders  are learning about the human body systems along with human growth and development.  We are spending some time on hygiene and how we can keep our body systems in tip top shape. The 7th graders are learning about drugs that affect us here in the BG area such as heroin, e-cigs, marijuana, prescription drugs, and alcohol.  They will be doing a research project at the end of each rotation. Finally, the 8th graders are learning about diseases, both communicable and non communicable. They too have a final project either building an app or designing a webpage to place their research information on.

SPANISH

The 6th and 7th grade students will have the opportunity to participate in a breakout box activity.  This activity is like an escape room in the classroom.

ORCHESTRA

Orchestra students are finishing up the year strong! Congratulations again to our 6th-8th Graders on a wonderful performance at our Orchestra Extravaganza Concert on May 10th! The students performed so well and Mrs. Anderson is very proud of all of them!

If your child is interested in auditioning for ILMEA and/or Chamber Orchestra next year, please make sure to have him/her check in with Mrs. Anderson before the end of the year to receive the music.

Students entering Grade 6 or 7 or 8 in the 2018–19 school year have a required summer reading assignment that is due on the first day of school.

Please read this PARENT LETTER for more info.

Your student must read at least ONE BOOK from The Power of One SUMMER READING LIST.

CLICK ON THIS LINK  (CLICK HERE FOR SPANISH) for details of the Middle School Summer Reading Assignment and the Parental Acknowledgment Form, to be signed by the student and his or her parent or guardian.

Information for Parents

As many of you may know, Thirteen Reasons Why released its second season on Friday, May 18. I wanted to pass on helpful information surrounding the sensitive topics expected to be re-introduced in season 2 (suicide, depression, sexual assault, threat of school violence, substance abuse). I know there will be multiple arenas that families will fall under:  not watching it at all, watching it with your child, or allowing children to watch on their own. Talking about these sensitive topics does not increase the likelihood that children will participate in harmful acts. Rather, discussing these topics gives them knowledge to better understand and deal with tough situations, and even help their friends. Links are included below to discussion topics and more information about the show itself. As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions, or if you have a concern about your child.

Resources for Parents, Educators and Teens

  • "13 Reasons Why" Resource Center from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Providing information on common risk factors and warning signs; that the best way to talk to someone you’re concerned about; strategies for having a conversation with those who are struggling; and how to connect them to help.

  • 13 Reasons Why Toolkit from Suicide Awareness Voices and Education (SAVE), supported by nearly two dozen mental health organizations, including APA. Provides resources for youth/peers, families, educators and professionals to address the specific topics raised in the episodes.

  • "13 Reasons Why" discussion guide and resources. Not sure where to start? Here is a guide for you and your family on how to discuss the difficult topics and important things to consider if you are planning to re-watch season one.

  • APA Blog: 13 Mental Health Questions about “13 Reasons Why,” addresses issues of warning signs of suicidal behavior, how to help a friend, why people self-harm, and more.

Technology Information for the 2018-2019 School Year

The end of the year is a busy time for everyone, but it's always good to get a head start and thinking next year. The policy concerning iPad damage will be different next year. This change is reflected below and in greater detail in the 2018-19 Student Handbook. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
