Principal's Message 5/11/18

5/11/18

TGIF…Twin Groves it’s Friday!

The cast and crew of our spring musical Annie Jr. (directed by Twin Groves teachers Dawn Bussert and Cara Anderson) gave us fantastic and fun performances to enjoy last week, including a cameo appearance for our students from our School Resource Officer Cliff Paul that brought the house down! TAKE A LOOK at some photos.

What’s Happening at Twin?

The SLC

Spring is finally here …….I think!  Hard to believe another school year has flown by and this is the final blog from the SLC.

We have finally completed all PARCC and MAP testing for the year!

With our “Cells” and “Road to Revolution” units behind us, we moved right into learning about the “U.S. Constitution.”

From the 3 Branches of Government, to the Bill of Rights to who are the Founding Fathers? We also learned all about the Preamble and are practicing to recite it!

Now we are jumping right into our science unit on “Forces.”

We have become very comfortable using our iPADs throughout the year. iPAds have been used to build background knowledge, pre-teach vocabulary and quiz  students before moving on in a unit. The students all enjoyed using BrainPop, Quizlet, videos and Kahoot before, during and after every new unit. They even became very good at navigating through the iPAD and using  Poplett to make thinking maps for writing assignments. Working hard on individual goals was key this year. Improving learner responsibilities was embedded daily, focusing on Learner Accountability (being responsible for my learning) and Learner Citizenship (being a middle school student). All students did a great job improving these responsibilities!

This has been a very successful year academically, social/emotionally and behaviorally for all the students. I am so  proud of them all, and look forward to next year!

See you in the Fall!

Have a happy, healthy and safe summer!

8th Grade

LA

In the Language Arts classrooms we have been immersed in the world of Shakespeare, in A Midsummer Night’s Dream in LA, and Romeo and Juliet in Advanced LA. We’ve been having a blast acting out our parts and really getting familiar with Shakespeare’s language. We are also analyzing how Shakespeare’s work is rendered new in some more contemporary pieces of fiction writing. Coming up with will revisit narrative writing, and students will attempt to creatively modernize scenes from Shakespeare’s plays.

Science

8th grade science students are going green for the end of the school year. They will be generating electricity using wind turbines and hydropower turbines.  The students will have a chance to AMP up their electricity production by 3D modeling and printing their own hydropower blades.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, students have just completed May Madness.  Students completed research and created campaigns to prove their president deserved the title of Mr. President or Mr. Disappointment.  In our final unit, students will explore the numerous college and career choices that are available and the economic ramifications of their goals for the future.

Bridge to Algebra 1

Students have just concluded their Volume unit. The students learned out how use and apply different formulas to find the volume of cones, cylinders, and spheres to solve real world problems. Our final unit of the year is focused on Statistics. Students will learn how to organize and analyze data from Two-Way Tables and Scatter Plots.

Algebra 1

Students have just concluded our final unit on Quadratic Equations. They learned how to solve quadratic equations using the square root method, zero-product property, by completing the square, and the quadratic formula. Our final unit is focusing on Descriptive Statistics. Students will be learning how to organize and analyze data from Histograms, Box & Whisker Plots, and Two-Way Tables.

Algebra 2

Students just completed the Graphing Trigonometric Functions where they learned how to apply their prior knowledge of transformations to our new sine, cosine, and tangent functions. Our final unit of study is Probability. Students are learning how to calculate the probability of independent and dependent events, permutations and combinations, and two-way table probability.
