TGIF…Twin Groves it’s Friday!  Enjoy your Spring Break! We will see everyone on Tuesday, April 3rd.

In an effort to spread positivity, Twin Groves uses our 5 Traits to recognize exemplars of the following qualities: Responsible, Accountable, Respectful, Safe, and a Community. In addition to the 5 Traits, we are also recognizing students for being an Upstander.

As part of this focus, the Twin Groves Staff would like to recognize and reward students who consistently demonstrate these qualities each month. For our first month of recognitions, we are pleased to announce that the following students have been selected for displaying these characteristics.

April is Sexual Assault and Prevention Month.

This month we will be sharing information about  Sexual Abuse and Assault and how to prevent it from happening.  We will focus on using our voices to correct harmful misconceptions about this behavior, promote everyday consent, model healthy behaviors and practice healthy communication with others. Sexual abuse is when there is unwanted sexual touching, either indirectly, directly through or under clothing, done through force or the threat of force.

Sexual assault occurs when a person is forced, coerced, and/or manipulated into any unwanted sexual activity. Sexual assault may also be called rape.

Individuals can embrace their voices to show their support for survivors, stand up to victim blaming and shut down rape jokes. Our words shape the world around us. Whether you are speaking out against locker room talk or helping someone better understand these issues, your voice is powerful and necessary in this conversation.

The following facts will be shared daily over the announcements starting on April 3rd.

  • Nearly 1 in 5 women in the United States have experienced rape or attempted rape some time in their lives, and 1 in 67 American men have experienced rape or attempted rape (Smith et al., 2017).
  • Victims of sexual assault often experience short-term consequences including guilt, shame, fear, numbness, shock, and feelings of isolation. Victims may also experience long-term health risks and behaviors such as PTSD, eating disorders, depression, pregnancy, and STI (Cutajar et al., 2010; Santaularia et al., 2014; Wingood, Seth, DiClemente, & Robinson, 2009).
  • The majority of sexual assaults, an estimated 63%, are never reported to the police (Rennison, 2002).
  • Despite misconceptions, the prevalence of false reporting for sexual assault crimes is low - between 2% and 10% (Lisak, Gardinier, Nicksa, & Cote, 2010).

April 11th will be Wear Teal Day. Wear Teal Day is a day of awareness where we encourage everyone to wear teal in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. You can wear teal shirts, nail polish, ribbons, jewelry, shoes or anything else you can think of!

On April 12th, we will be handing out bracelets at the lunch periods: The bracelets state NO MORE which gives support to victims of domestic violence and rape. Wearing the bracelet during April shows your support that all will feel safe and free from abuse and assault. Students are not required to take a bracelet.
