What's happeneing in the SLC?

The SLC

Welcome to trimester 3! Hard to believe there is only 12 weeks left to this school year!

We have completed the social studies unit on the “Road to Revolution’ and now move into our science unit on Cells. The big idea is that  all living things are made of cells. We will be exploring the structure and functions of plant and animals cells and creating our own cells!  We will be comparing and contrasting these cells using a double bubble thinking map too. Again, learning new vocabulary such as nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm and vacuoles is a highlight of every new unit. Using Quizlet is the easiest way to practice and master new vocabulary! Once we complete our science unit we will be back into social studies and on the Road to Revolution once again. This time we will be learning about the  U.S. Constitution.

We continue to provide targeted direct instruction to students in reading, written expression, mathematics, language for learning and language for thinking as well as reading comprehension. You can check TeacherEase to see the targets individualized to your child's learning levels in each of these areas.

As always, building independence, social skills and organizational skills are embedded throughout the school day. Please feel free to email or call with any questions, comments or concerns you may have.

Illinois Science Assessment (ISA)

All Illinois schools will administer the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) to students enrolled in grades 5 and 8 only. The ISA will be given online. This assessment will be given on one day and most students will complete the assessment in about an hour.

Twin Groves will be administering the Illinois Science Assessment to 8th grade students on March 21st.

Attention 8th Graders

Mark your calendars, parents of current 8th graders

So many opportunities to get involved are ahead.... Learn about them at the Stevenson High School Co-Curricular Fair on Wednesday, March 21, 6:30–8:30 p.m., in the SHS Field House. Incoming freshmen and their parents can get info about clubs, sports, and intramurals from student participants, coaches, and sponsors. LEARN MORE

Headphones

Please remind your child to bring headphones to school on a daily basis.  Headphones are needed in many classes. The school does have a small supply of headphones for checkout, but the supply is limited. Many students do not return the headphones when they borrow them.

ATTENTION: PARENTS OF 8th-GRADE STUDENTS:

Don't miss the Stand Strong annual transition to Stevenson High School on Wednesday, March 14th, from 7:00-8:30 PM at Stevenson High School.  Both parents of 8th-grade students AND the students are invited--in separate rooms--to this event that will focus on the social transition to high school. Experts on hand to answer parents' questions include Dr. Cristina Cortesi, Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator at Stevenson High School, Officer Rick Coakley, School Resource Officer at Stevenson, Claudia Kasten, Chief of Juvenile Division of the Lake County State's Attorney's Office, and the Kesslers, parents of a former Stevenson graduate who struggles with addiction.

In another room, current high school students will answer questions from 8th-grade students.

The event will be held next Wednesday, March 14th from 7:00-8:30 PM in the Little Theater/Recital Hall (Parking Lot D). REGISTRATION is appreciated but not required.

Questions? Please contact Jamie Epstein at [email protected].

Showcase at SHS

Two totally different family-friendly unique shows performing March 16th and 17th. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the PAC door or online at the Stevenson school store.
