2/16/18
TGIF…Twin Groves it’s Friday!
I hope everyone had a SWEET Valentine’s Day! Have a great weekend!
Just a reminder…
2/19- No School
2/23- Half Day for Students- 11:10 AM Dismissal
We all are devastated by yet another school shooting this week. It is always our top priority to keep all kids not only physically but emotionally safe. A little over 6 years ago, District 96 invested in remodeling our school entryways to require a "double buzz in" system paired with cameras and an immediate background check system. At that time we also updated our perimeter door processes and procedures. District 96 has a crisis committee that includes administrators and representatives from the police department, first responders and the fire department, and other community agencies. This committee meets monthly and the district crisis plan is up to date and aligned with best practice recommendations. The most recent update has included new training for all staff and students and improvements to our drill processes. While we cannot share any more specifics related to our crisis plan, please know that we are diligent in its implementation and in our consultation with experts. Please keep all of those impacted by the recent tragedy in your thoughts.
Resources we want to make available to help you if your child is asking questions or wants to talk include these prepared by the National Association of School Psychologists:
• Crisis: Helping Children Cope with Grief and Loss
• Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers (Spanish)
What is happening in Health?
This rotation in health the 6th graders are discussing First Aid. They are learning the treatment for common injuries in case they ever need to use those skills. 7th graders are learning about stress and anxiety and the ways they can manage them both. In addition, the students will be learning about suicide and what to do if a friend, family member, or themselves are ever found in this situation. This is facilitate with our school social worker and is mandated by Illinois State law. The 8th graders are learning about nutrition and what the foods they eat do to the cells in their bodies. The unit concludes with a fitness project that students have to design a meal plan, design a workout plan, and demonstrate exercises for their specific client.
During the weeks in Trimester 3, a presentation on relationship violence prevention will be presented in 8th grade health with each upcoming rotation. The purpose of the program is to teach students to recognize and cope with difficulty or risky relationship situations. Topics to be discussed are dating violence, gender equality, risk reduction and dispelling myths and giving facts about sexual assault The program is presented in a one 45 minute presentation during the regular 8th grade health class period.
Special Half Day Schedule on February 23rd
On February 23rd, the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students will see the movie Angst. Angst is a 56-minute film and virtual reality experience that explores anxiety, its causes, effects and what we can do about it. The filmmakers’ goal is to have a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. Angst features candid interviews with kids and young adults who suffer, or have suffered, from anxiety and what they’ve learned about it.
After the movie, the students will be having debrief discussions about the film in their Flex classes.

Attention Parents: If you are interested in viewing Angst, Twin Groves will be hosting a screening on Thursday, February 22nd at 7PM in the Learning Center.
Keeping Kids Safe
As we know, many people contribute to keeping kids safe in our community.
