Country Meadows families,
I know I say this every week, but we truly did have an incredible week of fun and learning at Country Meadows! All of our students had a great time participating in the kick off of the Kid Heart Challenge in PE today, and earlier this week the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students had an opportunity to attend an incredible author visit with Pablo Cartaya (see below for more details!). In addition to all of the fun, the sunshine was also greatly appreciated by all! We look forward to the Valentine's Day festivities next week (see below for guidelines/suggestions), and eagerly await the learning opportunities that students will engage in next week.
NEW *Reporting Absences*
Cold and flu season is upon us, and I wanted to provide a friendly reminder to report your child absent if he or she will not be at school. You can call the morning of the absence and leave a voicemail if our office staff is using the other line. If you choose to use email to communicate the absence, please make sure to email both Deb Stanton and Cheryl Kelly. This will ensure that the office is aware of the absence should one of our office staff members be out.
NEW *Author Visit*
Thank you so much to our amazing PTO for helping to sponsor such a meaningful opportunity for our students and for increasing student awareness of diverse authors and the impact they have on our learners! Pablo Cartaya was simply incredible. It was finally our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders turn to attend thier author visit this year, and Pablo Cartaya did not dissapoint. Students learned all about Pablo's Cuban heritage, how he uses his experiences and culture while writing childrens books, and how he embraces who he is as a Cuban American. Students learned that Pablo uses the themes culture, family, and community within his books, and were taught to remember the saying, "My Voice, My Story" when writing and engaging with literature.
NEW *Bus 244*
We simply want to say "thank you" to the bus driver of bus 244, Boris Kac. Boris has been an incredible friend and mentor to many students in his years as a bus driver in District 96, and we thank him as he begins his retirement. Today we made sure to capture his last ride into the Country Meadows bus turn around! Boris - thank you for the impact you have made in the lives and families of students at Country Meadows over the years!

REPEATING *Regarding the Coronavirus - Info & Guidance for Schools*
The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has issued this information and guidance–including Frequently Asked Questions regarding the coronavirus–for families whose students attend Illinois Kdg–Grade 12 schools.
The info includes this related link to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, which is frequently updated.
The IDPH continues to advise that the best way to prevent infection by this virus is similar to the precautions recommended to avoid the seasonal flu, including frequent hand washing.
REPEATING *Important Action Item for Parents of Current 5th Graders*
Parents of ALL currently enrolled 5th graders whose students will attend in School District 96 in the 2020–2021 school year must prove their residency again by Feb. 14, 2020.
Country Meadows Administrative Assistant Cheryl Kelly will accept proof of residency and provide a required form for your signature.
Please note that the requirement to re-prove residency for a current 5th grader applies–even for families who have other students currently attending KCSD96 schools.

REPEATING *Valentine's Day*
It's crazy to think that Valentine's Day is right around the corner! If you choose to include an item with your child's Valentines, please note that only non-food items are permissible.
Candy, snacks, or any sort of food item will be sent back home with your child on Valentine's day if sent to school. Non-food items are permitted, and there are many pre-packaged Valentines that can be purchased that include a trinket (i.e., pencil, erasers, bookmark, etc.). Card and party stores or stores with a birthday party aisle (i.e., Target) are a great place to look for these types of items.
Here are some ideas of non-food items if you choose to include something: Pencils, erasers, stickers, play-dough, bubble wands, plastic/rubber figurines, capsules that become figures when placed in water, mini deck of cards, spinning top, crazy straws.
REPEATING *KCSD96 Offers a Dual Language Opportunity*
Parents are invited to consider the Dual Language Program for their incoming Willow Grove kindergartner. The program’s purpose is to give children the opportunity to develop a deep academic proficiency in two languages. Fifty percent of the academic day instruction is delivered in Spanish and 50 percent in English. Following their kindergarten year at Willow Grove, Dual Language participants continue at Country Meadows for Grades 1–5 and transition to Woodlawn for Grades 6–8.
To be included in the public lottery that will be used to select the 2020–21 Dual Language kindergarten class, an Interest Form (ENGLISH or SPANISH) is due to the Willow Grove Early Learning Center office by 3 p.m. on Mar. 18.

¡Yo sé que digo esto cada semana, pero en realidad hemos tenido una semana increíble llena de diversión y aprendizaje en Country Meadows! Hoy todos nuestros estudiantes pasaron un momento agradable al participar en el Desafío de Niños para el Corazón en la clase de educación física, y al inicio de la semana los estudiantes de 3er, 4º, y 5º grado tuvieron la oportunidad de tener una visita del autor Pablo Cartaya (¡ver abajo para más detalles!). ¡Aparte de toda la diversión, todos apreciamos poder ver el sol! Estamos ansiosos por celebrar el Día de San Valentín y todas las actividades planeadas de la próxima semana (ver abajo para las instrucciones/sugerencias), y esperamos que los estudiantes obtengan grandes oportunidades de aprendizaje.
NUEVO *Reportando las Ausencias*
Ha llegado la época de resfriados, y quiero recordar a las familias que deben reportar la ausencia de su estudiante si no va a asistir a la escuela. Usted puede llamar en la mañana para reportar la ausencia y puede dejar un mensaje en caso de que la secretaria está ocupada con otra llamada. Si desea enviar un correo electrónico para reportar la ausencia, por favor de enviarlo tanto a Deb Stanton como a Cheryl Kelly. Así podemos asegurar que la oficina sabe de la ausencia en caso de que algún miembro de la oficina esté ausente.
NUEVO *Visita de Autor*
Fue increíble tener la visita de Pablo Cartaya. Finalmente fue el turno de los estudiantes de 3er, 4º, y 5º grado de asistir a la visita del autor de este año, y Pablo Cartaya no nos decepcionó. Los estudiantes aprendieron todo sobre la herencia cubana de Pablo, cómo él utilizó sus experiencias y la cultura mientras escribía los libros infantiles, y cómo él se acepta como Cubano Americano. Los estudiantes aprendieron que Pablo usa los temas de cultura, familia, y comunidad en de sus libros, y les enseñó que recordaran la frase, "Mi Voz, Mi Historia" al escribir y enfrentarse con la literatura.

Simplemente queremos decir “gracias” al conductor del autobús 244, Boris Kac. REITERACIÓN Respecto al Coronavirus: Información y Guía para las Escuelas
El Departamento de Salud Pública de Illinois (IDPH por sus siglas en Inglés) ha emitido esta información y guía–incluyendo Las Preguntas Más Frecuentes sobre el coronavirus (Spanish)–para familias cuyos estudiantes asisten a las escuelas de Illinois de los grados Kdg a 12.
La información incluye este enlace al sitio web de los Centros de Control y Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC por sus siglas en inglés) el cual se actualiza con frecuencia.
El IDPH continúa aconsejando que la mejor manera de prevenir la infección de este virus es similar a la de las precauciones que se recomiendan para evitar la influenza, incluyendo lavarse las manos con frecuencia.
REITERACIÓN *MEDIDA IMPORTANTE PARA PADRES DE ESTUDIANTES QUE ESTÁN EN 5º GRADO
Los padres de TODOS los estudiantes que están actualmente inscritos en 5º grado y que asistirán al Distrito Escolar 96 durante el año escolar 2020–2021 deben comprobar su domicilio nuevamente para el 14 de febrero, 2020.
La Asistente de Administración de Country Meadows Cheryl Kelly aceptará el comprobante de domicilio y le dará un formulario que requiere de su firma.
Por favor tome en cuenta que este requisito de volver a comprobar su domicilio para un estudiante que está actualmente en 5º grado aplica aún para las familias que tienen otros estudiantes que asisten a las escuelas del Distrito 96.

REITERACIÓN *Día de San Valentín*
¡No puedo creer que ya casi llega el Día de San Valentín! Si usted desea incluir un artículo para que su hijo celebre el día de San Valentín, por favor tenga en cuenta que solo se permiten artículos no comestibles.
Los dulces, meriendas, o cualquier tipo de alimento será regresado a casa con su hijo el día de San Valentín. Se permiten artículos no comestibles, y hay muchos productos de San Valentín previamente empacados que puede incluir (por ejemplo., lápices, borradores, marcador de libros, etc.). Las tiendas donde venden productos/artículos para fiestas (por ejemplo., Target) son un buen lugar para buscar este tipo de artículos/productos.
Algunas ideas de productos no comestibles si usted desea incluir algo: lápices, borradores, pegatinas, plastilina, cápsulas que se convierten en figuritas al colocar en agua, popotes locos, trompos.
REITERACIÓN *KCSD96 Ofrece una Oportunidad de Lenguaje Dual
Invitamos a los padres a que consideren el Programa de Lenguaje Dual para los estudiantes que entrarán al kindergarten de Willow Grove. El propósito de este programa es darle la oportunidad a los niños para que desarrollen una capacidad académica profunda en dos idiomas. Cincuenta por ciento de la enseñanza académica se implementará en Español y 50 por ciento en Inglés. Después de kindergarten en Willow Grove, los participantes continuarán en en Programa de Lenguaje Dual en Country Meadows para los grados 2–5 y pasarán a Woodlawn para los grados 6–8.
Para poder ser incluido en la lotería pública que se usará para seleccionar la clase de kindergarten de Lenguaje Dual del año escolar 2020–21, debe completar el Formulario de Interés y entregarlo en la oficina de Willow Grove Early Learning Center para el 18 de marzo a las 3 p.m.
