Mrs. Cumpata's Weekly Message - 5.5.23

Mrs. Cumpata's Weekly Message - 5.5.23

Good Afternoon Kildeer Families,

Our first week in May ended with sunshine and many celebrations!  As we journey into May and closer to the end of the school year, we appreciate your support with our focus on learning.  Students did a nice job of showing off their learning on the MAP test this week.  This reading and math assessment is nationally-normed which allows staff to track progress and target skill growth.

The end of the year brings many dates.  Here are a few things you may want to know about, however, this certainly does not include everything across all individual classrooms!

  • May 8-12: Staff Appreciation Week!

  • May 17: Field Day - All grade levels will enjoy a day outside engaging with their friends in games.  The rain date is May 18.

  • May 19: Kildeer PTO Family Picnic - Join other Kildeer families from 5:00pm-7:00pm to celebrate the end of the year.

  • May 23: Early Release & Kindergarten Transition Day - Kildeer will welcome our incoming 1st graders to meet the 1st grade team and specials teachers!

  • May 31: 5th Grade Transition Day - Kildeer 5th graders will get a sneak peek at Woodlawn.

  • May 31: 5th Grade Party - During the school day, our 5th graders will celebrate their hard work in elementary school with a party organized by the PTO!

  • June 2: Last Day of School - Half Day - Students dismissed at 11:45am

NEW *Update from the Nurse Abby*

Hi Kildeer families!

I wanted to formally introduce myself, my name is Abby and I am your student's new school nurse. I have been here for about a month now and have loved getting to know the students that I've been able to meet so far!

With us being in the last month of this school year, I wanted to start getting us prepared for the 2023-2024 school year in the health office!

If your child will require medication during the school day, please follow the link below and have the necessary forms (medication authorization and emergency action plans) filled out by your child’s pediatrician by the start of the new school year. I have also attached the Medication Authorization Form to the bottom of this email. A new Medication Authorization Form is needed for every school year and for each separate medication.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me.

NEW *FIELD DAY INFORMATION*

Field Day will take place on Wednesday, May 17th.  The rain date will be Thursday, May 18th. Students in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades will be participating in activities in the morning and 4th and 5th graders will participate in their activities in the afternoon. The Field Day events will take place on both grass fields and black top, including some parking areas.

Please have your child bring a water bottle with their name clearly marked on it. Students should come to school wearing sunscreen as teachers are not permitted to apply sunscreen. Students may wear hats to school on Field Day.

Gym shoes must be worn to Field Day. Plan on your child getting hot, very sweaty and a little dirty!

The Parent Drop off will remain the same, but once school is in session, the side parking lot will be blocked off.

Field Day is run by our PE teachers, classroom teachers, and support staff.  We have enough staff members to help with Field Day that we don’t need any parent volunteers.

We look forward to a successful and fun Field Day!

REPEAT * Cougars Got Talent*

During the month of May we want to highlight our students and staff by introducing Kildeer’s 1st Cougars Got Talent!  Students are able to record themselves demonstrating their talent and then send the video to Mr. Higgins and me.  Videos will be played throughout the month of May during all lunch periods.  We are excited to see all of our talented Cougars!

REPEAT *Proof of Dental Exam*

Dear Parents/Guardians of District 96 Kindergarteners, 2nd, and 6th Grade Students:

Please note that your child’s completed dental examination is now due, per Illinois school law. The deadline for the dental examination is due no later than May 15 of the current school year.  Proof of this required dental examination must have been completed within eighteen months prior to the May 15 deadline.

If you haven’t already done so, please make an appointment with your child’s dentist for a dental examination, have him and/or her complete the required form and return it to your child’s school nurse.

State of Illinois Proof of Dental Examination Form

In the event that you are unable to fulfill this requirement, the state of Illinois does permit a waiver of the examination.

REPEAT *Cross-Cultural Expert Speaks May 23*

An expert in the raising of children cross-culturally will share her wisdom with District 96 families at the end of next month.  Author Ruth E. Van Reken speaks virtually on “Raising Children Cross-Culturally: Maximizing the Benefits, Minimizing the Challenges'' on May 23, 2023 (7-8:30 p.m.).  She is the author of “Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds (3rd edition).”

Here’s what she will discuss:

“There is no question that there are many gifts for those who grow up interacting with different cultural communities. Learning to ‘code-switch’ positively in certain situations can be a great asset in today’s globalizing world. Being a cultural bridge is another gift that can come with such a childhood. But the realities of juggling the differing expectations between different cultural contexts can also introduce certain challenges. Questions related to identity, attachment, and belonging are often common during this process. This session will not only help to normalize why these challenges frequently arise, but also share practical strategies for how parents and other caregivers can help children maximize the gifts and grow from the challenges as well.”
