Kildeer Principal's Message- November 15th

End of trimester Cougar Pride Assembly

Dear Kildeer Families,

Just like that, our first trimester is over. Can you believe it? As you know, one of our district values is to "celebrate success" and that is exactly what we did today!

All students and staff gathered together to highlight various accomplishments and revisit some of the amazing times from the past few months. For example, we were able to watch a video celebrating our I AM ME...WE ARE KILDEER family celebration. Also, we were able to give acknowledgment to Mr. Emde and Ms. Groessl for the Blue Ribbon Award, as well as Mr. Kenny, our head custodian, for the Those Who Excel Award!

All students and staff left with a mission today. We all know the importance and value of being grateful. When we acknowledge happy moments and things we appreciate, we are bettering ourselves and those around us. Thus, I look forward to our bulletin board to come with every staff and student contributing what they are grateful for!

It is the end of the trimester, so what better way to celebrate than to join us next week for Family Reading Night? Someone once shared with me, "You'll never find the time, you must make the time." See if you and your family can dedicate some time together this next week!

SEL

PART TWO:

Social Emotion Learning- Part II

As was shared in the video "What does Social Emotional Learning  Mean in District 96?", this year students are receiving instruction on the social emotional targets throughout the school year. What does instruction look like for students?

Instruction can look different across settings and the target being addressed. For some targets such as Using expected behavior across all settings teachers may include an explicit discussion within the classroom where students help to identify what expected behavior looks like, sounds like and how it aligns with the specific activity. Following the discussion, students are provided opportunities to engage in the practice of these skills.

Once explicit instruction has occurred, teachers may embed the targets more implicitly, incorporating them into daily learning activities. For example, for the target Utlizie perspective-taking to analyze how one's behavior may affect others,  in literacy or social studies teachers may ask students to take the characters' perspectives and apply to their own perspective of a situation. Overall, instruction is occurring across settings both explicitly and implicitly with ongoing feedback provided to students.

PART ONE:

Social Emotional Learning, or SEL, has been intentionally embedded into District 96 instruction. Below you will find a short video clip to provide further information on the purpose, benefits, instruction, and reporting throughout the school year. If you are interested in more information regarding social emotional skills at your child's grade level, parent guides are available under the curriculum and instruction quick links on the District 96 webpage.

Family Reading Night

Family Reading Night is Thursday, November 21st from 6:30-7:40pm. Families will be able to enjoy quality time reading with your child right here at Kildeer! Mrs. Smith from the Vernon Area Public Library will also be at school to share information about their library programs. In addition, we will have teachers reading aloud with fun activities to go along with each book! Our theme is It's Showtime at Your Library.

Please keep in mind that children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.  There will be two sessions. Your family will decide which stations to attend.  Once a choice is made, we ask that you remain with your child inside the classroom for the entire session.  We look forward to seeing you there for this community event to celebrate READING!

Resilience. I had a training earlier this week on this concept. As you may know by now, Mrs. Fineman spent her last day with us at Kildeer on Tuesday. This was a difficult decision for her and we are eternally grateful for her years of service in the front office. I owe a lot of who I am as a principal due to her support, encouragement, and being my right-hand girl!

Yet again, I am proud of our community coming together. We had students writing cards, parents giving hugs, and our amazing staff coming together to serenade Mrs. Fineman.

I think we can all agree that this certainly has been a year of change. However, when I revisit the concept of resilience it's all about how we weather the storm and emerge stronger than we were before. How can we do that? We take care of each other and support one another.

Why? When we take the time to do this and work together, we are providing the best possible learning environment for our children. We share the same goals of cultivating an environment that values each member of this community and seeing our students excel.

I am beyond proud to be the Principal at Kildeer and feel grateful for this opportunity. Your children are what it's all about. Please help me in giving them a hug, high-five, or fist-bump to congratulate them on a great first trimester. Go Kildeer Cougars!

Fondly,

Mrs. Vail Kieser
