Kildeer Principal's Message-October 18th

Kildeer Principal's Message-October 18th

Dear Kildeer Families,

I've tried to write and rewrite this portion of the blog several times. The past week has been difficult, to say the least. We are missing Nurse Candy Anderson after having her as a part of our Kildeer family for the past 18 years. We focused on taking it a day at a time with healing, grieving, celebrating, and moving forward.

I cannot possibly express into words how much the words of support from each family have meant to our staff. The phone calls, the emails, and the food have all been a comfort during this tragic time. Do you know who has helped us the most? It's been the kids. They have provided simple hugs, thoughtful handwritten notes, or even just smiles. This week I was able to hear many memories about Mrs. Anderson and just what she meant to our students, staff, and parents.

Yesterday our entire school came together to honor Nurse Anderson during our buddy classroom time. As you probably know, she was famous for her magic mints in her office. Sometimes, that would be all that a student needed to feel better. She took such good care of all of us at Kildeer, so we wanted to do something in return to honor her legacy.

Students and staff had an opportunity to revisit our book this year, Say Something. In the story, we learn the importance of how our words and actions can inspire, heal, and transform. We learn that what we say and do, really matters. With that, we wanted to share how Nurse Anderson was kind to us and helped us when in need. Each student and staff member created their own "magic mint" that is proudly displayed in the main hallway of our school. Please check out the slideshow below:

If you have a chance to stop by, please check out the sweet words and pictures that honor Candy. We miss her dearly and feel extremely grateful for our time with her as a part of our Kildeer family.

In the meantime, please know that your children are in great hands with Nurse Allie. She was able to introduce herself to all students this week during PE classes. Although this change is difficult, Nurse Allie has already fit in really well and feels grateful to support our students during this time.

*NEW INFORMATION*

Stores are full of Halloween costumes, and I'm sure that your child is excitedly looking forward to getting a Halloween costume together for this year's festivities.  When selecting or creating a costume with your child to wear at school, please be sure that the following expectations are followed:

-Must be appropriate for school
-No masks, blood, super scary stuff, general ickiness, or weapons
-No cigars or cigarette items
-No bare tummies
-Please keep hair coloring and make-up simple
**If you are unsure about a costume or costume prop, please contact your child's classroom teacher.  Students whose costumes do not meet these expectations will be asked to adjust their costume for the school festivities.**

On October 31st, all students will have the opportunity to participate in a parade outdoors (dependent upon the weather) as well as the classroom party. Please see some reminders below:

  • The parade may be viewed by families outdoors. If it rains, it will be indoors for students and staff only.
  • The Halloween party is by invitation only from the PTO. At this point, you should know if you are a volunteer (if so, please no extra siblings)!

Reminder for treats during Halloween Parties:

They must be here by Wednesday morning (10/30), no later than 11:00 to be checked by our nurse. All snacks for the class parties should come in the ORIGINAL packaging or it will not be allowed in due to safety concerns. Please utilize only snacks from the APPROVED SNACK LIST.  Goodie bags are not allowed.  We appreciate your support in keeping our students safe!

Through our sudden loss, we've seen how powerful our community coming together has been. It is also important to remember with a loss that everyone grieves in their own way.

A staff member sent me this picture below just when I needed it most. I hope that it can bring you comfort if it's just what you need, too. My message in the past week has been the same: Let's continue to take care of each other and be there for each other. WE ARE KILDEER.

Winnie the Pooh

If there is anything our school can do to support you child, please don't hesitate to reach out. Wishing Nurse Anderson a happy birthday tomorrow. Her family continues to be in our thoughts.
