Kildeer Principal's Message-August 16th

Kildeer Principal's Message-August 16th

Dear Kildeer Families,

The halls are alive....with the sound of children! (Did you see what I did there? Sound of Music anyone?) We had an amazing first two days with them! One of my favorite places to stand is to greet our students when they come off the morning bus. It's a great way to connect first thing in the morning and start their day with a smile! The smiles in return are totally worth it!

Today we practiced our very first fire drill. I'm pleased to announce that our students and staff did a great job. Over the course of the year, we will continue to make safety a top priority through practicing other drills such as severe weather, bus evacuation, and lockdowns.

Next week marks our first full week and we are ready to get to learning! Our staff is working diligently to practice routines and procedures, while getting students acclimated to the new curriculum. It is going to be a great year of learning!

AFTER SCHOOL SPORTS PROGRAM - 3RD, 4TH AND 5TH GRADE
Beginning the week of August 26th, After School Sports will be offered to all students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade.  Some of the activities included are general games, basketball and volleyball.  The 3rd Graders will meet on Mondays, 4th Graders on Wednesdays and 5th Graders on Thursdays.  There will be 20 sessions for each grade level and all sessions run from 3:00 - 4:00.  Please make arrangements for your child to be picked up on time.  (If your child is continually picked up late it may result in your child no longer being able to stay for the program.  We highly recommend carpooling with other families.)  Children will be picked up in front of the building, and we strongly urge families to carpool.  There is a calendar posted  below with the scheduled dates for those who sign up to participate in the After School Sports Program.  Students do not have to attend every session.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.  In order for your child to participate, we will need the District 96 Parent Consent Form for Student Activity/Athletic Participation that can be found HERE!

BEFORE SCHOOL SPORTS PROGRAM -  1ST and 2ND GRADE
We are offering a Before School Sports Program for all 2nd grade students which will meet on Tuesday mornings beginning August 27th.  First grade Before School Sports Program will start on November 5, and more information will be available soon . Your child will be welcome to attend 10 sessions between 7:45-8:15 where we will play favorite games in the big gym before school begins. A calendar of the meeting dates is posted below.  Children do not have to attend every session that is offered.  Children will be expected to find their own transportation (not on the school bus) and can be dropped off at the FRONT OF THE BUILDING AT 7:45.   If your child attends the Club House program you will need to notify them about your child’s participation in our program.  In order for your child to participate, we will need the District 96 Parent Consent Form for Student Activity/Athletic Participation that can be found HERE

Thanks!
Ms. Groessl and Mr. Emde

Approved Snacks: What Parents Need to Know

The District has revised the APPROVED SNACK LIST, adding more items to this list to give families more choices. The items the list includes are free of the Top 8 allergens: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat.

This list includes the foods that are approved for students' Daily Snacks. It also includes (for children in Grades 1–5) foods approved for Special Events such as birthday treats for a class or for PTO Halloween, Winter, or Valentine's Day parties.

IMPORTANT: All items for Daily Snacks–with the exception of fruits and vegetables–MUST be prepackaged to allow staff to easily check that snacks meet the approved requirements.

Director of Educational Services Amy Gluck also has provided responses to FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs) about foods approved for daily snacks/special events.

For your convenience, find links to the District 96 Approved Snack List and Approved Snack List FAQs on the homepage of the District 96 website and the homepage of each school.

MAP Assessments August 19th-28th

District 96 students in kindergarten through Grade 8 will be participating in MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessments in the areas of math and reading/language arts during portions of their school days August 19th-28th.

The MAP assessment is given three times during the school year to equip our teachers with data they will use to identify their students' current understanding as well as opportunities for support and extension. Students do not need to study for their MAP tests; sufficient sleep and nutrition are, as always, the best preparation. This assessment serves as a benchmark–a point in time from which to measure academic growth through the academic year.

For more information about MAP assessments, please see the following resources:

PARENT’S GUIDE TO MAP GROWTH (Need a TRANSLATION?)

ABOUT MAP: PARENT TOOLKIT

In September KCSD96 parents will receive info by email with directions for accessing their child’s MAP assessment results online.

If you have questions about MAP assessments, please contact your student’s principal.

Curriculum Night ~ Curriculum Night is scheduled for Wednesday, August 21st. This is a “parents only” meeting, and I hope you can attend. Please come directly to the large gym for a brief presentation followed by classroom visits.
                             Grades 1-2 @ 6:30p.m.
                             Grades 3, 4 and 5 @  7:00 p.m.
Times overlap for grade levels on curriculum night with the intention that you only need to hear/see the principal portion one time. We start as a large group in the big gym space and after a few messages from us,  you’ll go to your children’s classrooms. Conference sign-ups will not be a part of this evening as we will use an online sign-up process again this year!

The partnership with our PTO is extremely important at Kildeer. Please take a moment each week to review the information to learn how you can get involved, support Kildeer, and dates to mark your calendar!

My one wish for all of our families is that you could be a fly on the wall on our first day of school. As we greeted children in the hallways prior to our first assembly, one little boy shouted, "I LOVE THIS SCHOOL!"

We take pride in our school community and treasure this time with your children. THIS is going to be a great school year! We look forward to seeing all of our parents at curriculum night on Wednesday. Please be sure to check out the visual schedule above to see the correct times for the presentations!

Have a great weekend ahead!

Warm Regards,

Mrs. Vail Kieser
