2019 National Blue Ribbon Award (New)

Today in Washington D.C., Willy the Wildcat accepted the official Blue Ribbon Award Placard and flag. I am overwhelmed with joy for all the hard work that this award represents. Students, staff, and the community that we all belong to helped make this great distinguishment happen. This is the second National Blue Ribbon Award that Ivy Hall has received. Ivy Hall was also recognized in 2008. We will have a celebration on December 5, 2019, at Ivy Hall. See details and register to attend below.

Social-Emotional Learning - Part II (New)

As was shared in the video "What does Social Emotional Learning  Mean in District 96?", this year students are receiving instruction on the social-emotional targets throughout the school year. What does instruction look like for students?

Instruction can look different across settings and the target being addressed. For some targets such as Using expected behavior across all settings teachers may include an explicit discussion within the classroom where students help to identify what expected behavior looks like, sounds like, and how it aligns with the specific activity. Following the discussion, students are provided opportunities to engage in the practice of these skills.

Once explicit instruction has occurred, teachers may embed the targets more implicitly, incorporating them into daily learning activities. For example, for the target Utlizie perspective-taking to analyze how one's behavior may affect others,  in literacy or social studies teachers may ask students to take the characters' perspectives and apply to their own perspective of a situation. Overall, instruction is occurring across settings both explicitly and implicitly with ongoing feedback provided to students.

A Real-Life Civics Lesson for Ivy Hall Second Graders  (New)

Following up on their social studies focus on civics and understanding the roles of community leaders and citizens, Ivy Hall second graders visited the Buffalo Grove Village Hall and Police Department today. Role-playing as citizens, Village Board members, trustees, legal counsel, fire and police commanders, and others, they considered a mock proposal to build a skatepark in the village. At the Buffalo Grove Police Department, they met traffic and patrol officers, detectives, and others committed to keeping members of their community safe. SEE PHOTOS of the second-grade visit to the Buffalo Grove Village Hall and Police Department.

A Reminder About Dismissal Procedures (New)

For the safety of all, we have various policies and routines in place to aid with dismissal each day. Anyone picking up a student should follow the traffic pattern at Parent (Car) Pick-Up off of Penny Lane. Please do not pick up students on Ivy Hall Lane.  This is a dangerous practice and one that impacts the flow of traffic. Additionally, please abide by the signs noting that the front parking lot is only for buses during drop-off and dismissal time each day. Cars are not permitted to enter the front lot while buses are present. Lastly, please remind your student(s) to cross Ivy Hall Lane at the crossing guard. The staff positioned at various locations support dismissal and help assure that students get where they need to go safely.  Thank you for your support with this.

Repeated Information

IT'S COLD OUTSIDE! (Repeat)

Please remember to send your child to school daily with proper outerwear.  Weather permitting students do go outside for recess every day. In winter the temperature and wind chill and weather conditions will be monitored throughout the morning.  The weather website and playground will be checked to determine whether conditions are appropriate for children’s outdoor recess. When the temperature or wind chill is below zero degrees, students will be kept inside for recess.  We weigh options when the temperature or wind chill is between zero to ten degrees, to determine if we have indoor or outdoor recess, such as how damp it is outside. We do try to allow the children to go outside whenever possible, so please help them to come prepared. Thank you!

How is Outdoor vs. Indoor Recess Determined (New)

In winter the temperature and wind chill and weather conditions will be monitored throughout the morning.  The weather Website and playground will be checked and outside supervisors consulted to determine whether conditions are appropriate for children’s outdoor recess.  When the temperature or wind chill is below zero degrees, students will be kept inside for recess. When the temperature or wind chill is 0 – 10 degrees, students may go outside for a shortened recess period.  If a student has a doctor’s note or a medical condition, he or she may stay inside the building office for recess.

Determination of whether children will have outdoor recess will be made prior to each recess period, based on the weather at the moment and in the judgment of the principal or his or her designee.  Any request for prolonged indoor recess MUST come from the child’s physician.
