In Our Schools …..

This week, Ivy Hall second graders expanded their cultural understanding, as they explored each others’ backgrounds on a “Culture Walk.”  In social studies, students have been learning about the culture characteristics within their community. Students began by focusing on their own culture by completing a culture mosaic. After the culture walk, students worked with a partner to compare/contrast their own culture with each other's.

During last week's Culture Walk, students had 'passports' that they had to fill in with information from other students’ presentations and gleaned from their own classmates before traveling to three other second-grade classrooms to explore fellow students’ presentations.

A few students dressed in cultural dress and others brought items to share, such as an American Girl Doll; a miniature menorah; the three-spiraled triskele, a Celtic symbol of spirituality; an Indian candle; and a small figurine of Ganesha, the elephant-headed Hindu god of prosperity and wisdom.
