Country Meadows Families,
As we enter the month of October, I find it encouraging that student and staff energy is still high! As a staff, we have worked incredibly hard getting to know our students, their families, and developing learning experiences that are meaningful for all. I am continually impressed with this school community and the collaborative culture that rallies around our students. I am also impressed with the work ethic and compassion that our students exhibit each day - whether I overhear a student stating, "I'll get it next time!", or I see a student holding another student's hand down the hall to make sure he/she feels supported! I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Country Meadows is the very best place to be!

All of our classroom teachers have received training on how to effectively engage students into instruction using Kagan Cooperative Learning Structures. At any point during the school day, I can walk into a classroom and see some sort of structure being used! Rather than calling on students one at a time, engagement structures give all students a chance to provide input and participate within a short amount of time!
This week I had the privilege of visiting the incredible Mrs. Lockhart in our Exploration Lab and saw Kagan happening first hand in the classroom as they engaged in a fun teambuilder! I jumped at the opportunity to take a video so that I could share it with all of you! You will see students up, moving, & participating as they take part in a Mixed Pair Share structure while Mrs. Lockhart guides student interactions. As you will hear in the video, this is a structure they also used in class regularly!

This is a friendly reminder that we do not have school this upcoming Monday, October 8th due to Columbus Day. We will see the students back at school on Tuesday, October 9th!
NEW *Culture Night*
On November 28th, Woodlawn and Country Meadows will come together for our first annual, "This is Us... We are Woodlawn and Country Meadows" event! Given the rich diversity of the cultures in our shared community, we are looking forward to engaging families and students in a night where we celebrate about our own culture, learn/celebrate the cultures of others, and build a sense of a shared WL/CM culture.
If your child and family are interested in participating in this event, please indicate so by completing this Google Form (English) or this Google Form (Spanish). We will be communicating the logistics of the event when we have a better understanding of how many participants we will have and how they prefer to participate.
NEW *PARCC Assessment Results*
A WORD ABOUT PARCC ASSESSMENT RESULTS:
Today your student is bringing home his or her PARCC data for the PARCC assessment administered in April 2018. Please check your student’s backpack for these assessment results.
The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) is the assessment and accountability measure used for students enrolled in Illinois public schools. Students in Grades 3–8 take this assessment in the academic areas of English language arts and mathematics.
PARCC results show whether your student met grade-level expectations and is on track for the next grade level. Please note that PARCC is only one measure of how your student is performing academically.
The Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) results for current sixth grade students will also be included. The ISA is administered to students enrolled in grade 5 and grade 8 at their respective grade level.
The ISA measures the Illinois Learning Standards in Science, incorporating the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) that replaced the previous science standards adopted in 1997. The NGSS are the most comprehensive science standards that Illinois has ever had. They are more rigorous and detailed as they integrate the content of science with the practices of science.

Celebrate Math! Night–Oct. 15
Parents, bring your elementary students (Grades KDG–5) on Mon., Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. to Ivy Hall Elementary School, 1072 Ivy Hall Ln., Buffalo Grove, for the District's Celebrate Math! Night.
Math coaches will give a brief presentation, then parents will be able to see what learning math in KCSD96 is like from their children's perspective.

Please remember that after school clubs and activities end at 4:00pm. If you are parked in the parking lot, please walk to meet your child on the sidewalk. We do not allow students to walk to cars parked in parking spaces as there are other cars entering and exiting the lot at that time, and our top priority is keeping all students safe. REPEATING *Picture Retakes*
Picture retakes are scheduled for Monday, October 15th. If your child missed picture day he or she should bring an order form with them. There are additional order forms in the office, or you can order online with our School Code 10018001. If your child is simply retaking his or her picture, please have them bring their original packet the day of picture retakes.
Each week, I make an effort to get into each classroom to observe student learning & interact with students. Before leaving the classroom, I write the class a note on my "bird paper" for the teacher to read when I leave. One student approached me in the hallway and here was our interaction:
Student: Mrs. Bird, I saw your bird paper today. Does that mean you like birds?
Me: Great question...I would say yes! Birds are interesting!
Student: Hmm... (long pause) ...I think when I grow up, I am going to name myself Mrs. Cat!
These are the moments that absolutely make my day. If you run into a Mrs. Cat in the future, you'll know where it all began! :) Enjoy your long weekend!

¡Al empezar el mes de octubre, me parece alentar ver que los estudiantes y el personal aún tienen una gran energía! Como personal, hemos trabajado arduamente en llegar a conocer a nuestros estudiantes, sus familias y en desarrollar experiencias de aprendizaje que son significativas para todos. Estoy impresionada con la comunidad escolar y con la cultura que coopera y alienta a nuestros estudiantes. También estoy impresionada con la ética de trabajo y la compasión que nuestros estudiantes demuestran cada día - ya sea que escuche a un estudiante diciendo, "¡Lo lograré la próxima vez!", ¡o veo a un estudiante sostener la mano de otro estudiante para asegurarse que se sienta apoyado! ¡Lo he dicho antes, lo diré nuevamente, Country Meadows es el mejor lugar!

Todos nuestros maestros han recibido un entrenamiento sobre cómo involucrar a los estudiantes en la enseñanza usando La Estructuras Cooperativas de Kagan. ¡En cualquier momento del día, yo puedo entrar a un salón y ver algún tipo de estructura siendo utilizada! ¡En lugar de llamar a los estudiantes de uno en uno, las estructuras de involucramiento le dan a todos los estudiantes la oportunidad de brindar su opiniones y participar en un corto período de tiempo!

¡El 28 de noviembre, Woodlawn y Country Meadows se unirán para nuestro primer evento, "Somos Nosotros... Somos Woodlawn y Country Meadows"! Dado que existe una gran diversidad de culturas en nuestra comunidad, esperamos que las familias y los estudiantes se involucren donde celebraremos sobre nuestra cultura, aprenderemos/celebraremos sobre nuestra propia cultura y la de los demás, y desarrollaremos un sentido de una cultura compartida en WL/CM.
Si su hijo y su familia está interesada en participar en este evento, puede completar el formulario de Google. Estaremos explicando sobre el evento cuando sepamos cuántos participantes habrán y de cómo prefieran participar.

RESULTADOS DE LA PRUEBA DE PARCC:
Hoy su estudiante llevará casa la información de PARCC de la evaluación que se hizo en Abril 2018. Por favor revise la mochila de su estudiante para los resultados de la evaluación.
La Evaluación de la Asociación para la Evaluación de la Preparación para la Universidad y las Profesiones (PARCC por su siglas en Inglés) es la medida de evaluación y responsabilidad utilizada para los estudiantes inscritos en las escuelas públicas de Illinois. Los estudiantes en los grados 3–8 realizan esta evaluación en la áreas académicas de Inglés, Lectoescritura y matemáticas.
Los resultados PARCC muestran si su estudiante cumplió con las expectativas de nivel de grado y si va encaminado hacia el próximo nivel de grado. Tome en cuenta que note PARCC es solo una medida de cómo va el desempeño académico de su estudiante.
Los resultados de la Evaluación de Ciencias de Illinois (ISA por sus siglas en Inglés) de los estudiantes actuales de sexto grado también están incluídos. El ISA es administrado para los estudiantes que están inscritos en 5º grado y 8º grado en su respectivo nivel de grado.
El ISA mide los Estándares de Aprendizaje de Ciencias de Illinois, integrando Los Estándares de Ciencia de la Próxima Generación (NGSS por sus siglas en Inglés) que reemplazó los estándares de ciencias anteriores aprobados en 1997. Los estándares de ciencia más completos que ha tenido Illinois. Son más rigurosos y detallados ya que integran el contenido de la ciencia con las prácticas de la ciencia.

Recuerde que las actividades y clubes después de clases finalizan a las 4:00pm. Si usted está ubicado en el estacionamiento, por favor camine hacia la banqueta para encontrarse con su hijo. Nosotros no dejamos que los estudiantes caminen hacia los carros que están estacionados en las áreas de estacionamiento ya que otros carros están entrando y saliendo del estacionamiento a esa hora, y nuestra prioridad es la de mantener a nuestros estudiantes seguros. REITERACIÓN *Vuelve a tomar tu foto*
Vuelve a tomar tu foto el lunes 15 de octubre. Si su hijo estuvo ausente el día de tomar fotos, deberá traer el formulario para ordenar las fotos ese día. Hay más formularios en la oficina, o puede ordenar en línea con nuestro Código Escolar 10018001. Si su hijo simplemente quiere volver a tomarse la foto, por favor dígale que traiga el sobre original en ese día.
Cada semana, procuro visitar cada salón para observar el aprendizaje y poder interactuar con los estudiantes. Antes de salir del salón, escribo una cartita en mi "papel bird" para que lo lea la maestra. Un estudiante se acercó a mí en el pasillo y esto fue lo que sucedió:
Estudiante: Mrs. Bird, vi tu papel bird hoy. ¿Eso quiere decir que te gustan los pájaros?
Yo: Buena pregunta…¡creo que si! ¡Los pájaros son fascinantes!
Estudiante: Hmm... (pausa prolongada) …¡creo que cuando crezca, me voy a poner Mrs. Cat de nombre!
Estos son los momentos alegran mi día. ¡Si te encuentras con Mrs. Cat en el futuro, sabrá la razón de cómo empezó todo! :) ¡Disfruten de este largo fin de semana!
