Country Meadows Families,
Happy Friday! We had another great week of learning here at Country Meadows! MAP testing is complete, we did an amazing job following directions during our first fire drill this morning, and our first dessert day was super exciting! I was also able to join in during an activity in music class with our 1st graders where we practiced learning everyone's name with a fun song and ball activity! In addition to all of the remarkable things happening in classrooms, this was also the first week that I was truly able to dive into our theme, This is Me, with students. The book that I am reading to students begins with a child being told to pack only a few items before immigrating to a different country with her family. This flashback leads a classroom teacher to challenge her class by imagining which items they would pack with them that would say to the world, “Hi there, THIS IS ME!”
After reading the story to a few classes this week, I then challenged each student to think of items that would represent their unique differences and say to the class, “THIS IS ME!”. We shared our thinking with the whole group, and I can honestly say that in each classroom, I was incredibly impressed with the depth of student thoughtfulness. We learned so much about each other while also learning to value how our individual differences make Country Meadows stronger...and in the end makes us an amazing school community.

After-school opportunities for Country Meadows elementary students are included in our school's VIRTUAL BACKPACK and on our CLUBS/SPORTS webpage. Students currently have an opportunity to learn to speak Spanish through a Fun Fluency Spanish Immersion class. The policy concerning damage to iPads will be changing beginning in the 2018–2019 school year. Please be sure you READ AND UNDERSTAND THESE CHANGES and discuss them with your student. Direct any questions to your student’s school principal.
The week was full of fun moments, and I always find myself struggling to capture just how amazing each day truly is. My husband, Conrad, gets the daily recap at dinner each night, but my blog would take forever to read if I tried to include all of the fun stories and experiences students add to each day. Here is an example of why, again, I believe I have the very best job in the world. I mean, in what other profession can you receive beauty advice from a 6-year-old?
Here’s the background: I have naturally curly hair, and some days I decide to give the straight iron a break and go the natural route. It wasn’t until I was outside saying goodbye to the students as they got on the bus that one of our 2nd graders ran up to me and exclaimed while hugging me, “Mrs. Bird! Are you kidding me? Was it crazy hair day in the front office or something?” Let’s just say that after giggling and admiring the honesty, I was immediately grateful that I straightened my hair for picture day last week.

¡Feliz Viernes! ¡Tuvimos otra semana maravillosa aquí en Country Meadows! ¡Se completaron las pruebas de MAP, hicimos un buen trabajo siguiendo las instrucciones durante nuestra primera práctica de simulacro de incendio esta mañana, y nuestro primer Día de Postre fue divertido! Además de todas las cosas maravillosas que ocurrieron en los salones, esta fue la primera semana en la que realmente pude participar con los estudiantes con nuestro tema, Este soy yo. El libro que les estoy leyendo a los estudiantes empieza con una niña a quien le dicen que solo empaque unas cuantas cosas antes de emigrar a otro país con su familia. Esto hace que la maestra desafíe a su clase para que piensen en las cosas que ellos empacarían diciéndole al mundo, “¡Hola, ESTE SOY YO!”
Esta semana, después de leerles el cuento a algunas cuantas clases, yo desafié a cada estudiante para que pensaran en las cosas que representan sus diferencias y decirle a la clase, “¡ESTE SOY YO!”. Compartimos nuestras reflexiones con todo el grupo, y puedo decir honestamente que en cada salón, estuve muy impresionada con el detalle de la reflexión de los estudiantes. Aprendimos mucho el uno del otro al mismo tiempo que aprendíamos a valorar cómo nuestras diferencias individuales hacen a Country Meadows más fuerte...y al final nos hace una increíble comunidad escolar.

La regla acerca de los iPads dañados cambiará a principios del año escolar 2018–2019. Por favor asegúrese de LEER Y ENTENDER ESTOS CAMBIOS y converse con su estudiante acerca de ello. Si tiene alguna pregunta se puede contactar con el/la Director/a de la escuela de su hijo.
La semana estuvo llena de momentos divertidos, y siempre me encuentro luchando por percibir lo increíble que puede ser cada día. Cada noche, mi esposo Conrad, se entera del resumen diario, pero leer mi blog tomaría una eternidad si incluyera todos los momentos divertidos y las experiencias de los estudiantes. Les doy un ejemplo de por qué creo que tengo el mejor trabajo del mundo. ¿O sea, en cuál otra profesión podrías recibir consejos de belleza de un estudiante de 6 años?
Les cuento: Mi cabello natural es rizado, y hay días en el que decido darle un descanso a mi plancha de cabello y uso mi pelo rizado. No fue hasta que salí a despedirme de los estudiantes mientras subían al autobús que uno de los estudiantes de 2º grado corrió hacia mi mientras me abrazaba diciendo, “¡Sra. Bird! ¿Estás bromeando? ¿Acaso hoy fue el día de llevar el pelo alocado en la oficina?” Déjeme decirles que después de reir y admirar su sinceridad, me sentí aliviada de haberme alisado el cabello para el día que tomaron fotos.
¡Espero que tengan un fin de semana maravilloso, y espero ver a todos los estudiantes el martes en la mañana!
