Woodlawn Principal's Blog 4/13/18 -- Friday the 13th

Another great week here at Woodlawn!  As we come down the home stretch, I am really going to miss this group of 8th grade students.  They are fun, mature and great to be around. Today was DQ Blizzard dessert day. Very tasty. Thanks PTO and all of our volunteers for being here today.  Just a few items this week.

Stand Strong

All interested parents, this is a very informative program that I think we need to be aware of the impact of vaping, juuling and E-cigarettes. The number of middle school students doing this is on the rise.

Filtering Facts from Myths on Vaping, Juuling, & E-Cigarettes

This event will be at Woodlawn, this Thursday., Apr. 26, 7–8 PM, in our Learning Center.

Fill out this information and we will see you on the 26th!

*  Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, a highly addictive drug.  The younger a person starts using nicotine the greater the chance they have of becoming addicted to nicotine and other substances.

*  20 of the chemicals found in e-cigarettes are listed on the FDA's established list of harmful or potentially harmful substances.

*  9 of the chemicals found in vape juice are known carcinogens (such as formaldehyde).

*  Teens who vape are almost 4 times more likely to smoke regular cigarettes.

*  Cancer takes 20+ years to develop.

First Track Meet

We had over 300 students from Woodlawn, Lake Zurich and Fremont here yesterday.  Love the track! Thanks for caring about the students, their interests and especially their safety D96!  Awesome!

8th Grade Field Trip

Earlier this week, our 8th graders visited the new state-of-the-art “Take a Stand” exhibit at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center (IHMEC) in Skokie to enhance our civil rights/human rights unit.  While there, they viewed and analyzed artwork that both promoted human rights and called attention to human rights violations around the globe. They also explored the interactive gallery of upstanders to learn about various injustices in history and the current day, and how people, many of them average, everyday kids and adults, have worked to right the wrongs in their communities, countries, and world by advocating for racial and gender equality, fair pay, equal access to education, and safe communities.  The highlight of the field trip was the experience in the Holocaust survivor hologram theater. Inside, students were able to ask questions to Aaron Elster, a Holocaust survivor in hologram form. Through the use of artificial intelligence, Mr. Elster was able to answer questions directly to our students. Technology is amazing! Students learned about his struggle to survive the horrors of the Holocaust at the young age of 10, his strength and spirit, and his message to all about standing up to bigotry and injustice.  Upon leaving the museum, students learned that the real Aaron Elster was in the hospital. Many of our students decided to write heartfelt, get well wishes to him, documenting his impact on them and their willingness to support human rights. Sadly, we learned that Mr. Elster passed away on Wednesday evening. These letters have been sent on to his family so hopefully they will find comfort in the fact that Aaron’s legacy of hope, tolerance, and inclusion will live on. Through this experience, as the leaders of tomorrow, we hope our students will be inspired to be advocates for change where change is needed and will always stand up and stand out for human rights.  Our students were the model of class as they toured the museum.

DuFour Award Night

We had a fun time at the DuFour celebration evening.  Here was a picture from 5 minutes before it started.  I would like to thank the parents who attended...both of them.  I would also like to thank the PTO representatives who attended as well...both of them.  School Board members attended (2), and luckily, some Woodlawn staff and the GCI committee stopped in to hear the great things that we are doing.

Finally, Happy Friday the 13th!  I tried to stay away from the the number 13 throughout my sporting career as I had a significant lack of talent to begin with, so why press my luck.  As a freshman in high school, after only my second game ever, I was made the starting quarterback of the Arlington High School Freshman “B” football team. Yep, 5’3”, 110lbs of rompin’, stompin’ dynomite.  Having been a receiver the first two games, I found out quickly that it was much better to run out of bounds with the ball than to get crushed by guys who were much faster and stronger. We were narrowly defeated in those first two games by scores of 44-0 and 36-0.  It just so happened that our quarterbacks each broke their wrists in the first two games, so a third sacrifice was needed. The biggest issue I had was my number had to change. I went from a very cool #83 jersey to the dreaded #13. Our first game was bumpy, 30-0 setback where I completed 5 passes.  Unfortunately, 3 of the 5 passes were to the other team. Clearly the jersey. I was sacked 10 times and tossed around like a rag doll (I hear the parents who don’t like me cheering in my head right now). Long story long, in the second to last game, we faced another incredibly horrible team. Needless to say, the mighty Cardinals of AHS steamrolled to a 6-0 victory in a game for the ages.  Names like Reynolds, Hanke, Vandeeran, Peterson, Meyer, Olivo, Harrington, Taylor, Serano and Campbell still ring in my head. Mostly because they never blocked anyone (Peterson could block). As an FYI, 6 of those guys were at my wedding.

Enjoy these Friday the 13th facts:

1. Friggatriskaidekaphobia is when someone is afraid of Friday the 13th. Nearly 20 million Americans are affected by friggatriskaidekaphobia. It’s also called paraskavedekatriaphobia. Being afraid of No. 13 is called triskaidekaphobia.

2. Part of the reason 13 got a bad rap is because it comes after 12, which is a number of “completeness.” For example: 12 months in a year, 12 hours in a clock, 12 God of Olympus, 12 Zodiac signs, 12 tribes of Israel, 12 days of Christmas, 12 labors of Hercules, 12 Apostles of Jesus and 12 eggs in a dozen.

3. Many hospitals don’t have a room number with 13 in it as well as a 13th floor. The same thing goes for tall buildings. Normally the 13th floor is skipped. Some airlines omit Gate 13.

4. A 13th guest at a table is considered unlucky, and in Paris sometimes a quatorzieme is hired to be a professional 14th guest and balance out the luck.

5.There is at least one Friday the 13th in every year, and at the most there are three.

6. Hollywood has capitalized on the Friday the 13th superstitions. Four of the 12 movies released were done so on Friday the 13th.

7. Tupac Shakur was killed on Friday the 13th.

8. Fidel Castro was born on Friday, Aug. 13, 1956.

9. Butch Cassidy, who was an infamous American train and bank robber, was born on Friday, April 13, 1866.

10. President Franklin D. Roosevelt would never have a 13th guest at a meal, nor would he travel on the 13th day of any month.

11.  The number 13 is considered lucky by Italians

12.  Dan Marino, former NFL quarterback of the Miami Dolphins, is considered one of the greats QBs by some, and he wore the number 13.

14.  Taylor Swift considers 13 her lucky number and used to paint 13 on her hand.
