Woodlawn Principal's Blog 11/17/17

Here is a little shot of reality for you...Thanksgiving is 6 days away.  November is flying by and we have our parent/teacher conferences coming up this Monday and Tuesday night. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at conferences. Also, report cards went live at 3p.m. today.

Report Card Information

An Important Note About Student Progress Reports

Your student’s progress report is available for you to access online today–Friday, Nov. 17, after 3 p.m. If you need assistance, please CLICK HERE for instructions to view your student’s progress report, to switch between your children’s progress reports, and more.

An important note for parents:

When standards repeat in more than one trimester we do not expect that students will master the knowledge and skills indicated until the last trimester in which the standard is reported. It is likely that many students will earn a score of Developing (D for elementary) or 2 for middle school until the final trimester in which the standard is addressed.

For standards in literacy courses that repeat in more than one trimester, we report based on progress toward end-of-year expectations. Your child's score for each trimester indicates his or her progress toward end-of-year expectations, so you have consistent information regarding your child’s current progress, compared to where he or she should be later in the school or at the end of the school year.

We assess students using text we expect they will be able to master by the end of the school year, so the progress report indicates your child's progress toward that expectation. A steady progression toward mastery is what you should expect. For example, an expected progression on the report card for a standard that repeats in more than one trimester could be Not Mastering (1) or Developing (2) in Trimester 1, Developing (2) in Trimester 2, and Mastering (3) in Trimester 3.

Community Service Club

The Community Service Club has been hard at work constructing our Giving Tree. Help us brighten the day of children in the hospital this holiday season. Students can choose a leaf (or leaves) from the tree and bring it home. Purchase the item on the leaf and bring them back to school to deposit in the collection bin. Please make sure everything is new and unwrapped. The Community Service Club will collect all the gifts and deliver them to a children's hospital. Any students looking to help further can come to our club meetings on Mondays after school - we will make cards and get well kits for children and their families to include with our donation. The following is a list of some things we are looking to collect:

Lego Sets, Shopkins, VTech Learning Toys, Littlest Pet Shop Dolls or Sets, Model Building Kits, Science Activity Kits, My Little Pony Dolls or Sets, Imaginext DC Heroes Figures or Sets, Hot Wheels Cars, G,PG, or PG-13 Movies on DVD, iTunes Cards, Target Gift Cards, Amazon Gift Cards, Arts and Crafts Supplies, Books Travel Toiletries for Family Members

All items should be NEW and unwrapped!!  Thank you!

Parent Coffee

Mrs. Bird and I had a great discussion with Woodlawn parents at our Flex discussion on Thursday morning.  We talked about where we are in the process of genius hour, where we hope to go in the future and how our students are having their needs met through the flex time. Look for more to come in my blog about this.

Last Chance For Conference Sign Up

Sign ups for conference will end on Monday.  Parents are asked to call the Woodlawn main office (847-353-8500) and set up one 15 minute conference with a teacher on the team of your child.  Conferences are an important time and I hope that everyone is able to come during the scheduled conference times which are Monday, November 20th from 5-7p.m. and Tuesday, November 21st from 2-7p.m.  Over the years, many families have taken the opportunity to go out of town for a family vacation over the Thanksgiving Break.  Because so many families do this, we cannot offer a face to face meeting with a teacher after the conference times.  Per our district handbook, “Should you be unable to schedule a conference during the conference times identified on the school calendar, a parent may request a brief phone conference with the student’s teacher and individual team members when appropriate.  It is not the expectation of the District that teams recreate the conference experience outside the dates/times identified on the calendar.”  Thank you for your understanding.

Orchestra Concert

Mrs. Bird had the honor of attending our Orchestra Concert Wednesday night and reported that it was fantastic.  She said that everyone did a great job and that she was very impressed with the way our students played.  Nicely done orchestra!
