The first Friday in May is here as we steamroll toward the end of the year.  It is also Cinco De Mayo, which contrary to popular belief, is not the celebration of Mexico’s independence.  It actually commemorates a battle on the 5th of May that was an unexpected victory by 2,000 soldiers in the Mexican army over 6,000 French troops.  Now you can impress your friends at a neighborhood BBQ...no problem.

Science Olympiad

Woodlawn has the 12th best team in the entire state of Illinois, improving over the team from last year who won the state title in the “B” division.  Mr. Alvarez wants everyone to know how very proud he is of the team that competed at State.  There were several events where students earned a medal in this very tough division.  As a team, all of our Woodlawn students worked hard, did their best and grew as a team throughout the year, earning the rank as the 12th best team in the State.  Way to go Science Olympiad Team!!!

State Medal Winners:
3rd place- Jonny and Vincent - Crimebusters
3rd place- Kendrick, Sophia, Edward - Experimental Design
5th place- Amelia, Rosie - Optics
5th place- Emily, Amelia - Wright Stuff
1st place- Aashish, Rohit - Geocashing
5th place- Rohan, Rohan - Rollercoaster

Chorus Concert
Great job by our Woodlawn Chorus members last night.  Mrs. Kennedy-Bird found herself singing songs all the way home.  As always, great job chorus!

Wrestling State Qualifiers
Our Wrestling State Qualifiers banner is up!! Once again I want to recognize our exceptional wrestlers from this past season.

Jacob Whiting (7th), just missed qualifying for State as a 6th grader last season by 2 points. He came back this year as a 7th grader hungry and determined to make the trip down to NIU this year. He pinned an 8th grader from Oak Grove with his favorite move, the Spadle, to punch his ticket at Sectionals. Jacob finished 24-8 on the season, which moves him up to 4th (46)  on Woodlawn Wrestling's Career Wins record board.

Cole Rhemrev (7th), is a 2x Regional Champion, 2x Sectional Champion, and 2x State Qualifier. Cole is a exceptionally gifted wrestler with a work ethic that is second to none. Cole finished 6th place at State as a sixth grader last season. This year he found himself in one of the toughest brackets of the tournament with 2 returning State champs and a handful of other medalist, all of which were eighth graders. Unfortunately, Cole was unable to make it back to the medal stand this season, but I have no doubts he be a force to reckoned with next season. Cole is finished the season with a 28-2 record and is now 3rd on Woodlawn Wrestling's ALL TIME Career Wins list with 53.

Arie Guzman (8th), was our breakout wrestler of the year! Arie has wrestled with us for all three years here at Woodlawn. He finished his seventh grade season 21-11 and came up just short of being a State Qualifier. Arie's goal was to make it to State as an 8th grader. He shocked everyone by upsetting several Top 6 seeds at the tournament this year and coming away with a 5th place Medal! Arie was a 3rd place Sectional Qualifier. He was pinned on his first match at State on day 1. He was carried back in to day 2 where he went 4-1 on the day. That second day did not come without excitement. He pinned his first match of the day, won in Sudden Victory OT in his second match, pinned his 3rd match, lost his 4th match of the day in the last few seconds, and finished the day off avenging his loss from day 1 with a pin!! Arie finished this season 32-7 and holds the top spot on Woodlawn's ALL TIME Career Wins list with 61.

Congratulation boys!!!!

PTO Staff Appreciation Week
The PTO once again spoiled the Woodlawn staff by having a wonderful week of treats for us.  Between the treats, lunches and gift, we felt the love and appreciation from our parents.  I have always said that there is a special relationship within the Woodlawn community between the staff and our families.  Please know that the teachers value our partnership greatly.

Community Service Club
Thank you to everyone who donated items for our food drive. The Community Service Club collected all the food and it was delivered to the Vernon Township Food Pantry yesterday. The pantry was extremely grateful for the large donation. Another very successful endeavor by our Community Service Club! Last Call for Dental Forms
6th Grade parents!!!  This is it and we mean it.
Please note that if your child has not submitted a Dental Exam Report to the Nurse, the final deadline is May 15th.  There are Dental forms available that can be downloaded by going onto the District website, or most Dentists have them available and can complete them at the time of examination.  If you choose to have the exam waived, that form is also available online at the District website.

It is a state law that all 6th graders comply and submit a Dental Exam Report to the school.  Many families have already submitted the forms.  If your child still needs to have this mandated exam done, we ask that you please submit the completed form as soon as possible.  Thank you so very much.

Finally, my wife has been in Ecuador for the last week, doing a mission trip and sharing her skills as a doctor of audiology. Julie and a colleague serviced over 500 children during the last week.  Just so you know, at our house, Julie is flat out, “The Franchise”.  She runs the show and everything runs through her.  As you know, I have 2 children in college and I still have 2 at home.  Although she trusts me to take good care of our children, I cannot help but to feel that she has some doubts.  There were a bunch of notes that were left for me and some of them had me wondering, “Does she really think that I need this much detail?”.   Here are a couple of examples:

Sunday:  Go to the store and buy food for the children.  DO NOT buy items not on the list.
My response:  I feel that this is directed at me personally.  Is she saying not to let the kids talk me into stuff, or that I shouldn’t buy the necessities like Pringles and any of the ice cream that is on sale?  I’m feeling judged.

Monday: Pick up (youngest daughter) from gymnastics at 7:30p.m.  Drive over at 7:15p.m. and wait in the parking lot.  No carpool.
My response:  Drive over?  Were you expecting to take my flying DeLorean?

Wednesday:  Garbage day.  Take ALL of the garbage out.
My response:  I was thinking about leaving some of the garbage in the can, just to get that special smell in our garage.  Full disclosure, because of a high pressure, 8th grade school project and a slightly unreasonable daughter, the garbage did not get taken out that day. Luckily, my father in Arlington Heights has his garbage day on Thursday.  Done and done.  She will not get the satisfaction of knowing that I messed that one up.  Unless she reads this.

Well, I made it to Friday.  Yikes, I need her back soon.  It has been a rough week.
