President’s Day Weekend is here!  This Monday, February 20th there is no school.  I hope that everyone is able to take advantage of this 3 day weekend and from what I hear, the weather will be fantastic.  Today we had the highest temperature since 1880, 137 years ago.  Wow.  Just a few items this week...

Friendly Reminder
When visiting Woodlawn, please park in actual parking spaces.  We need to keep the front of the building clear, just in case there is an emergency.

Conferences
Parent Teacher Conferences
Conference dates are set! They are Thursday, March 9th from 5-8:30p.m. and Friday, March 10th from 10a.m. until 1:30p.m. All conferences are student led, meaning your student must be here with you, and that it is set up to be with the homeroom teacher of your child.  If you would like to set up a time to have your student led conference, call the Woodlawn main office at 847-353-8500 beginning this Tuesday, February 21.

Supply Kits
The Woodlawn PTO is selling custom-made school supply kits for your student(s) for use in the 2017-18 school year. Skip the last minute shopping and support your the PTO by purchasing a supply kit! School supply kits will be conveniently available for pick-up at "Locker Set-Up Day" in August.
Last year, the Woodlawn PTO was the pilot school for the data management system, taking orders and processing credit card payments through Membership Toolkit.  If you haven’t used this system yet, you CREATE AN ACCOUNT (link below).  Parents can continue to use the toolkit throughout the 2017-18 school year to sign-up for PTO volunteer opportunities, register and pay for PTO events, activities and fundraisers. If you have an incoming 6th grader and a 7th or 8th grader, you can update your account and add students to the Woodlawn database.

Lock Up Your Liquor
This year, 5 of the middle schools that feed into Stevenson High School, Daniel Wright, Twin Groves, Woodlawn, Aptakisic and West Oak, joined forces with Stand Strong Coalition and the Stevenson High School Catalyst group to help prevent underage drinking and drug use for our community.  Thirty 7th and 8th grade students were trained by the high school students this summer on how to effectively evaluate issues facing the community in terms of teen alcohol and drug use and how to best combat these issues.  These students learned that in our community, the majority of teens do NOT use alcohol and drugs.  However, of the teens who do report using alcohol, most of the teens report obtaining their alcohol from their parents.

The middle school students decided to address this issue by educating parents with 3 facts they deemed to be most important:
1) 1/3 of the youth in our community who report drinking alcohol obtained their alcohol from their parents' supply;
2)  Exposure to alcohol during the teen years can change both the function and the structure of the growing brain, possibly forever;
3)  Research shows that adolescents are less likely to use alcohol when they know their parents disapprove.

In addition to educating the parents, the campaign allows parents to request a free magnetic lock.  To obtain your free lock, go to https://goo.gl/2ak7SX or see StandStrongCoalition.org.  Stand Strong is a community coalition that works to prevent underage drinking and drug use for the youth in District 125 and its feeder middle schools.

PTO Executive Board Openings
This is one of those things that I haven’t received any parent feedback. I have been informed that the  Woodlawn PTO will have a couple of opening on our Executive Board next year.  If you are interested, please send an e-mail to me and I will forward your interest to our PTO President for next year, Missy Stevens.  Selections will happen before April, but send me your interest right away.

Community Service Club

We will still be collecting items for the Community Service Club!  Send in items for our troops until February 28th.  Remember that we are accepting many items for our service men and women!  See the blog last week for details.

Finally, my children are like most children, they love a day off of school.  My youngest son takes it to a whole new level as his physical appearance changes, his outlook on life improves and a light comes to his eyes.  My wife and I are both in the education field, we promote working hard in school and balancing it with activities outside of the school day.  The kid does well in school, unfortunately, it feels like a job to him.  As a junior in high school, he and I talk about college, we have a couple of visits planned, but he doesn’t have a passion for any specific field.  This is new for me, I had a student/athlete who looked at numerous schools, and a science/math nerd who was completely focused on 5 specific schools. There are many options out there for him and time for him to decide, so until that time, he will enjoy President’s Day, Spring Break, Summer Break and every other day that he doesn’t have to be in school.  He’s a great, great kid, and he will figure it out.  Right?  Why don’t these children come with a handbook?
